Head Custodian

The Role: Meadow Brook School is seeking a reliable, organized, and proactive Head Custodian to lead custodial and maintenance operations. The Head Custodian plays a critical role in ensuring a safe, clean, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for young learners, staff, families, and visitors. This position supervises custodial staff, coordinates building maintenance needs, and works closely with school administration to support daily school operations and special events. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills, along with the ability to respond calmly and effectively to emergencies and changing priorities in a busy school environment. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Building Operations & Maintenance Maintain high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety throughout the school building and grounds. Establish and adjust custodial schedules and procedures to meet the needs of the school. Perform custodial duties including cleaning classrooms, bathrooms, cafeterias, offices, hallways, and common areas. Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs including painting, plumbing, electrical work, equipment troubleshooting, and HVAC filter replacement. Monitor all building operational systems and notify administration of concerns or major repair needs. Conduct routine inspections of facilities, equipment, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, roof drains, and gutters. Operate snow removal equipment and apply salt/sand to maintain safe walkways and entrances. Perform weekend facility checks. Leadership & Supervision Supervise and assign work to custodial staff. Address day-to-day staff concerns and communicate issues to administration as needed. Assist in maintaining staff productivity during summer cleaning and school breaks. Communication & Coordination Work collaboratively with school administration, teachers, and staff to support building operations and school events. Respond to custodial requests, maintenance concerns, and emergency situations in a timely manner. Maintain accurate records including inventory, work orders, fuel logs, maintenance logs, and time/attendance records. Communicate building and custodial needs to administration. Safety & Compliance Adhere to all district safety procedures and regulations. Maintain MSDS/SDS documentation and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) logs. Monitor and maintain custodial equipment and supplies. Ensure safe storage and use of cleaning products and equipment. Respond appropriately to emergencies including alarms, flooding, after-hours incidents, and weather-related events. Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Prior custodial, facilities, maintenance, or supervisory experience preferred. Experience in a school or educational setting is highly desirable. Knowledge of custodial procedures, cleaning methods, and maintenance practices. Ability to prioritize tasks and balance routine responsibilities with unexpected needs. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate effectively with administrators, staff, students, and families. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills. Preferred Experience Floor care including buffing, stripping, and waxing. Equipment troubleshooting and preventative maintenance systems. Inventory management and ordering procedures. Snow removal operations and emergency response procedures. The work environment includes the school building and outdoor areas in varying weather conditions. This full-time, year-round position may require evening, weekend, and emergency response responsibilities. Salary range $27.52 - $31.36/hr.
