Manager of Horticulture and Grounds This position is responsible for efficiently and effectively overseeing the day-to-day horticultural operations and care of the Frick's arboretum campus, leading the Grounds team, and collaborating with other departments on public education and engagement.Hours: 35 hours per week, varying days with occasional evening and weekend work requiredReports to: Director of OperationsFull-time, exempt with benefitsSalary: $57,072 - $63,414 based on experience.Responsibilities:Horticultural Leadership: 75%Ensures that The Frick Pittsburgh conforms to the highest standards of garden management practicesWork with the Executive Director, Director of Operations, and others to develop and evolve the grounds and gardens of the museum campusAllocate staff resources and oversee work of Grounds staff and others in assigned areas, including weeding, mulching, mowing, plant trimming, and leaf cleanupLead planting, pruning, and integrated pest management of trees, shrubs, and annual and perennial plant collections at a high technical levelSteward the Frick's status as a Level 1 arboretumDevelop and maintain the grounds and Greenhouse maintenance scheduleSupport teamwork, mutual respect, active engagement, and cooperation among assigned teamWith the Director of Operations, develop and maintain the annual grounds budgetMaintain and properly and safely use grounds and gardening equipment and vehicles and instruct the Grounds team in the sameMaintain equipment preventative maintenance logs.Conduct pest and disease scouting, monitoring, and treatments and oversee other plant health practicesOversee the safe application of pesticides and soil amendments and maintain associated records and certifications.Propose and participate in the development of environmentally sustainable initiativesEnsure all records and plant labels are inventoried and accurate.Coordinate all grounds-related service and maintenance contractsMaintain orders for necessary supplies and materialsSteward the Frick's partnership with Grow PittsburghParticipate in ongoing learning and professional development opportunitiesRepresent the Frick at professional workshops and conferencesPublic Education and Installations: 20%In collaboration with the Curatorial and Learning departments, oversee garden design, plant selection, and long-term planning to leverage the vision and intent for each assigned garden spaceServe as liaison to the Learning department to ensure horticultural care, plant selection, garden design, and project schedules align with the Learning department's programmatic needs and use of garden spacesAssist with staff trainings related to horticulture and groundsAssist in arboretum education and communication priorities by occasionally providing tours, contributing to arboretum publications and marketing initiatives, assisting with educational programing, and interacting with visitorsCollaborate with the Curatorial department on the annual December holiday installationCollaborate with the Curatorial department on occasional Greenhouse art installationsCollaborate with the Advancement department on horticulture/grounds-related fundraising effortsAdditional Operational Support: 5%Supervise and perform snow removal operations including hand shoveling and equipment operationServe as an essential employee for weather related response and site closuresOther related job duties as assignedQualifications:BA/BS in horticulture or related field and two years of experience or equivalent six years combination of education and/or practical experience in horticulture and landscape designExperience supporting educational programing through horticultureExperience working collaboratively and leading a team towards a common goal.Commitment to creating an inclusive workplace cultureProficiency with basic computer functions and applications, including Teams and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, MaintainX project management system)Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively with both visitors and staffAbility to perform physical labor, occasionally lifting objects of 50+ poundsKnowledge of pesticides and adherence to applicable regulationsSome knowledge of small engine and equipment repairClearance of a criminal background checkMust have and maintain a valid PA driver's licenseWithin one year of employment, must earn and maintain ISA Certified Arborist credentialWithin one year of employment, must possess and maintain a Pennsylvania Pesticide LicensePreferred QualificationAbility to operate equipment related to grounds management functions, including front-end loaders, tractors, and pickup truck mounted snow plows, leaf blowers, riding and push mowers, string trimmers, salt/sand spreaders, snow blowers, and dump trucks
