Data Engineer - Role Description Work Environment & Data LandscapeOperates within a multi-source, distributed data environmentData originates from:Multiple databases and data warehousesFiles and cloud-based storage systemsSignificant emphasis on data consolidation and transformationFlexibility to define and implement data engineering tools and architectureExposure to evolving AI/ML use cases requiring structured and reusable datasets This environment requires working with incomplete or fragmented data ecosystems, with a focus on building scalable and maintainable data structures. Team Role & FocusActs as a foundational contributor to AI/ML initiatives by enabling high-quality data accessPartners with:Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)Data ScientistsEngineering TeamsResponsible for shaping how data is structured, stored, and consumedExpected to operate with a high degree of autonomy and technical decision-making Key Responsibilities Data Pipeline DevelopmentDesign and build ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest and process data from multiple sourcesIntegrate structured and unstructured data into centralized datasetsEnsure pipelines are scalable, reliable, and maintainable Data Modeling & ArchitectureDevelop and maintain structured data models tailored to AI/ML use casesDesign datasets and data subsets optimized for downstream consumptionBuild and manage databases supporting analytics and ML workflows Graph & Knowledge SystemsDevelop and maintain knowledge graphs and graph-based data structuresBuild and manage graph databases (e.g., Neo4j) to support knowledge-driven applicationsStructure relationships across datasets to enable advanced querying and insights Workflow Orchestration & Data OperationsOrchestrate data workflows and pipeline executionEnsure data availability, timeliness, and quality across systemsMonitor and improve data reliability and processing efficiency Collaboration & Data EnablementWork closely with SMEs and data science teams to define data requirementsTranslate business and analytical needs into structured data solutionsSupport downstream AI/ML workflows through well-designed data foundations Required Skills & ExperienceStrong foundation in data engineering principles and best practicesProven experience designing and implementing ETL/ELT pipelinesExpertise in SQL and relational data modelingExperience integrating data from multiple, distributed sourcesAbility to work independently and make technical design decisions Preferred ExperienceExperience with graph databases (Neo4j strongly preferred)Knowledge of knowledge graph or knowledge base developmentFamiliarity with workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Apache Airflow or similar)Experience supporting AI/ML data use cases Future / Optional ExposureHealthcare data standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR) may become relevant but are not required initially Technologies & Tools (Environment Exposure)Graph databases: Neo4jSQL-based systems and relational databasesWorkflow orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow)Cloud platforms (Azure preferred)Python ecosystem (optional but beneficial) Candidate ProfileMid to sr -level Data EngineerStrong independent contributor with hands-on experienceComfortable working with fragmented or evolving data environmentsAble to design and implement scalable data solutions with minimal oversight Skills AWS, SQL, Python, Data, Neo4J, Azure, Apache Airflow, Pandas, FHIR, HL7 Top Skills AWS, SQL, Python, Data, Neo4J, Azure, Apache Airflow, Pandas, FHIR, HL7 Additional Skills & QualificationsHealthcare data standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR) may become relevant but are not required initiallyPython (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, PySpark)Exposure to vector databases and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)Cloud platform experience (Azure preferred) Experience Level Intermediate Level Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Deerfield, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $70.00 - $85.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
