Mortgage Underwriting Team Lead

About the Role We are seeking an experienced Underwriting Team Lead to oversee a team of mortgage underwriters within our growing independent mortgage banking operation. This role blends hands-on underwriting expertise with leadership, ensuring loans are reviewed accurately, efficiently, and in full compliance with investor and regulatory guidelines. What You’ll Do Lead, coach, and develop a team of underwriters to meet quality and turnaround expectations Underwrite complex residential mortgage loans (Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA) Serve as an escalation point for exception scenarios and second-level reviews Manage pipeline distribution and ensure timely file movement Partner with processing, closing, and sales teams to resolve conditions and keep loans on track Monitor team performance metrics and drive continuous improvement Ensure compliance with agency guidelines and regulatory standards Support audits and contribute to underwriting policy enhancements What We’re Looking For 5+ years of mortgage underwriting experience Prior leadership or mentoring experience preferred Strong knowledge of agency guidelines (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, USDA) Experience with Encompass loan origination system required DE, SAR, or LAPP certification Proven ability to manage a pipeline in a fast-paced environment Strong analytical skills and sound credit judgment Excellent communication and team leadership abilities Why Join Us Competitive salary Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage 401(k) Paid time off and company holidays A collaborative, growth-focused culture within a stable independent mortgage banker Apply today to join a team where your leadership and underwriting expertise make a direct impact.
