Engineering Lead, Design Services, SDC Team

Job Description Engineering Leads in BIW's Design Services Mechanical Engineering group perform duties and provide leadership and supervision to teams of Engineers, Technicians, and BMDA Designers to accomplish BIW LYS contract tasking and support for all DDG 51 class tools.The Systems Development and Controls Engineering Lead will be charged with oversight of SDC projects, they will oversee design team system and tool performance. This role will provide strategic input into future infrastructure and continuous improvement plans. Works with our Design and Engineering & IT teams across multiple programs to provide the highest level of support and tools possible.The Design Services SDC Engineering Lead is a leadership role accountable to Mechanical Engineering Management. This position demands a proactive leader who can communicate extremely effectively and manage our unique projects and teams. This position will interface regularly with BIW Management and other GD business units such as Electric Boat. The Engineering Lead will ensure compliance with safety, quality, technical and performance standards and have goals to further develop and expand Design Services' level of support.Key ResponsibilitiesSafety Leadership:\nBe a safety leader for your team and ensure that each person leaves in the condition they came in.\nEnsure all safety training is completed on time.\n\nProgram Execution:Responsible for engineering Projects and on-time delivery for development and mgmt. approved initiatives.\nEngineering Management:\nLead efforts, including development, test procedures, and work instructions that support roll out.\nSet appropriate team expectations for completion of goals.\nEnsure accountability of task and goal completion.\nManage processes to ensure that quality, schedule and cost performance goals are achieved on all programs.\nPerform supervisory and administrative duties including resource management, employee development, safety, performance evaluations, progress reporting, assist with hiring, honoring labor contracts, employee time verification, and BMDA contract administration.\n\nTraining and Development:\nProvide technical training, guidance and leadership to assigned personnel.\nEstablish and maintain effective work procedures and instructions for engineering processes.\nProvide onboarding and mentor plans for new engineers entering the team.\n\nTeam Collaboration and Communication:\nEnsure proper communication is maintained among the team and with other groups both internal and external (GD Business units).\nInterface with, and support, Engineering, Program Office, Design, Estimating, Contracts, Materials, Planning, Manufacturing, Navy, and other customer organizations as required.\n\nContinuous Improvement:\nEnsure proper up to date process documentation for all team processes.\nUtilize BIW BOS principles to review performance and remove waste from processes.\nRequired/Preferred Education/Training\nBachelor of Science Degree in Engineering is Required.\nExpert knowledge of Design Services Detail Design and change process is required.\nSQL and strong database architecture required.\nStrong technical understanding of BIW systems IXD, and MACPAC 3D Viewer required.\nAbility to understand and interpret technical requirements.\n\nRequired/Preferred Experience\nMinimum 10 years of technical engineering experience required; breadth of shipbuilding and marine engineering experience is preferred.\n3 years of technical supervisory / project lead experience required, including demonstrated technical / project management skills.\nAbility to lead, motivate, and inspire teams of engineers, technicians, and associate engineers.\nUnderstands the elements of ship design.\nExcellent organizational and communications skills, both oral and written.\nDemonstrated management, project coordination and leadership skills required. Strong written, oral communications and organizational skills required.\nProficiency with computers including SQL, VBA, C++ Microsoft suite of products required.\nAbility and willingness to work in and promote a true team environment.\nSuccessful experience in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.\n
