- The Principal Planner is responsible to plan, organize, and direct the Current or Advance Planning Section within the Community and Economic Development Department; and to coordinate activities with other divisions and departments.
- The Principal Planner reports directly to the Planning Manager; is responsible for complex land use projects, entitlement and Municipal Code review, and special projects with Planning Division of the Community and Economic Development Department; to provide highly complex staff assistance to the Director of Community and Economic Development; and to coordinate activities with other City Divisions and Departments.

- Confer with engineers, developers, architects, a variety of agencies, and the general public in acquiring information and coordinating planning and zoning matters; provide information regarding City development requirements.
- Principles and practices of urban planning and development with particular emphasis on environmental review, zoning, land usage and division, and general planning.
