- Peer specialists perform a variety of therapeutic and supportive tasks that include assisting Veterans in articulating their goals for recovery and personal wellness, learning, and practicing new skills, helping them monitor their progress, assisting them in their treatment, modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the peer specialist's own recovery experience, and supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services.
- Former competitive civil service employees eligible for reinstatement; Veterans eligible under VEOA, VRA, and 30% DAV; Those eligible under the Employment Program for People with Disabilities; and those eligible for CTAP/ICTAP. NOTE: You MUST provide copies of your DD-214 and Peer Specialist Certification, with your application package.
- Certifications: Peer Specialists Onboard on or before August 1, 2022: All peer specialists who are already onboard on August 1, 2022, who were determined to have a qualifying peer specialist certification at the time they were hired as peer specialists, are deemed to meet the peer specialist certification requirement.
- Effective August 1, 2022: Applicants not already onboard as peer specialists in VHA on August 1, 2022 must have a full, current, and unrestricted peer specialist certification from one of the following sources to qualify: The peer specialist certification training provided to peer support staff members by one of the VHA OMHSP-contracted peer specialist certification training vendors.
- A candidate with a provisional state-issued peer specialist certification can be hired on a time-limited appointment as a GS-5 peer support apprentice.
