- The NNP serves as an expert clinical nurse who utilizes specialized knowledge and skill obtained from advanced formal education and clinical expertise to promote optimum care of patients and families with acute neonatal issues.
- The NNP assesses the health status of the pediatric client (0-2 years of age) through interview, health history, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests.
- In collaboration with the physician, the NNP evaluates test findings, makes initial medical diagnosis, provides patient/family education, and initiates appropriate action to facilitate the implementation of the therapeutic plan consistent with the continuing health care needs of the patient.
- The NNP will participate in the provision of health care services for neonatal patients.
- The NNP acts as a consultant to the patient/family, nursing staff, institution, and community in the area of neonatal needs.
