- CDOT maintenance personnel maintain the Colorado Department of Transportation's highway system and facilities to as near original conditions as constructed utilizing available resources, personnel, equipment and material to ensure a safe roadway for the traveling public.
- Travel to remote locations along the side of the road, often in adverse weather and road conditions, to diagnose and perform all mechanical repairs on CDOT equipment; maintain and perform work out of a service road truck; repair heavy equipment, trucks, loaders, dozers, road graders, etc.
- Disassemble units, inspect composites and analyze failures, replace failed parts, and properly reassemble units in the following systems: brakes, drive, electrical, hydraulic, air, steering and suspension, engines, computer controlled sanders and liquid de-icing systems, AVL systems, etc.
- Design and fabricate special tools, parts, and attachments for equipment and equipment repair and for maintenance patrols; use arc welding, oxygen-acetylene cutting and welding, plasma cutter, MIG and TIG, mills, lathes, metal cutting saws, etc.
