Director of Community and Youth Engagement - St. Luke's, Cleveland St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is a small parish with a large mission in Detroit Shoreway, located between the Gordon Square and Cudell neighborhoods. We are made up of several congregations: a congregation of Sunday worshipers, a congregation of Wednesday diners, and a congregation of volunteers. There is overlap between each of these groups and we work to integrate them as much as possible. We have a long history of bringing people together through food and creating community that values the abilities and participation of all people as well as promotes the well-being of children. We have two goals that we hope our new director will help us accomplish:
Learn more deeply the joys and concerns of our neighbors and participate in social justice work that is important to the heart of the community.
Discern how to rebuild ministry to children and youth in our neighborhood and start taking steps to accomplish this goal.
The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, converse easily with new people, collaborate with others and be open to learning new things. This job often requires connecting people with resources, whether they are resources the church can offer or connections through local nonprofits. The director must be able to structure their time and prioritize tasks based on importance and urgency. Knowledge of grant funding is a plus.
This is a full-time, salaried position with fully paid health and dental insurance, health savings account, 20 days of paid time off annually, and pension contribution at a salary of $42,000 per year (before taxes). Timing of work is flexible when approved by supervising clergy, but long-standing events may not be moved.
Areas of Responsibilities
As part of the staff and volunteer team:
Participate in weekly staff meetings and one-on-one debriefing meetings with clergy as directed.
Manage budgets that relate to the Director of Community & Youth Engagement and participate in the annual budgeting process, including planning for additional new programming expenses.
Manage physical spaces and materials involved in events that you lead and coordinate having volunteer help to do so.
Create structure for your week and track/report your hours and activities to supervising clergy.
Community Engagement:
Volunteer recruitment and programming (in partnership with clergy) for St. Luke’s ongoing community ministries and annual events including:
Community Meal A fresh, healthy, hearty meal that serves everyone who comes through the door as well as an emergency shelter. Serves approximately 120 people with options to dine-in and carry out. Also distributes hygiene items. Every Wednesday 3-6:30. This program is run by our chef, the director recruits and trains volunteers and offers support to the chef. We are a distribution site for the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. The second and fourth Monday of every month we have two shifts of workers from 2-4 and 4:45-7. Volunteers repackage and distribute 10-12,000 lbs of food to approx. 200 families. This program is run by our chef. The director recruits and trains volunteers and offers support to the chef.
Your Neighbor’s Cloak Free Store Our free store focuses on giving ready access to clean, seasonal clothing to our neighbors. We also distribute home goods when we have space. Wednesdays 3-6:30. This program is run by two volunteers; the director recruits and trains volunteers and offers support to the volunteer leaders support. This is a completely free event designed to create opportunities for fun and fellowship and to give away prizes supportive of community needs and community businesses. Bingo is the third Monday of the month in odd months. The chef organizes the snacks. The director leads the event.
Cleveland Pride A parishioner is on the diocesan planning team for this event, but the director provides support and executes the broader communication pieces. The event takes place every June, but there is lead-up work involved. This is a large endeavor where we invite all our neighbors, have live music, free food, and activities that may include bingo, games, and art as we celebrate together. Nonprofits are invited to co-host and table the event. This event is organized and led by the director with assistance from clergy. The event ends in a vigil led by clergy. The chef organizes the food. Every June 19 with significant preparation months before hand.
Back to School The director coordinates with local Episcopal churches and nonprofits to collect and distribute backpacks filled with all the school supplies needed for 300 children in Cleveland. Every August. In partnership with Northwest Neighborhoods. Community Christmas Presents The director coordinates with local Episcopal churches and nonprofits to collect and distribute Christmas presents for people of all ages who register for them, approx. 300. Every Nov-Dec. Community Christmas Party The director coordinates with the chef to throw a Christmas party during Community Meal with extended hours one Wednesday in December. Greater Cleveland Congregations The director participates in GCC meetings and supports parishioners in organizing work they take on, primarily by coordinating broader communication. On-going. Develop relationships with local nonprofits and religious organizations to further support the Detroit Shoreway community and discern social justice action points
Help ensure that St. Luke’s uses it’s buildings and properties to support community programming in our neighborhood.
Represent St. Luke’s at community meetings and nonprofit gatherings.
Develop new or reframe older events or programs to meet the changing context of our neighborhood.
Establish relationships with local churches by leading Sunday post-worship educational opportunities about education or poverty in Cleveland, St. Luke’s, etc. (approx. once per eight weeks)
Youth Support
One-third of the director’s time will be spent in this role. For up to one year from hire date:
Develop relationships with local nonprofits and religious organizations to discern where children and youth most frequently gather, what needs they have, and how St. Luke’s is best suited to help meet them.
Develop relationships with local schools to advertise the Back to School event as well as discern how the church may volunteer within the school and support children’s learning.
Help offer use of our building to community groups that support children.
Use St. Luke’s events and ministries to get to know children and youth and what they are interested in.
Plan and execute 2-3 simple one-off events with volunteers that cater to youth and children in the community so that we can get to know them and increase the neighborhood’s exposure to St. Luke’s (example: trunk or treat) and add a children/youth portion to current St. Luke’s events (example: give away stuffed animals at the pet blessing)
To launch after approximately one year:
Strategically plan engagement events and offerings for the youth of the community.
Work with parish volunteers to offer children’s lessons during church from the start of the sermon through passing the peace (approximately 25 minutes)
Curate an experience with and for the children and youth met over the last year and further discern what programming and resource gaps there are in the community.
Continue and expand on the one-off events that cater to local families.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree or three years of equivalent experience in a related field (for example: volunteer coordinating, community development, youth programming)
Willingness to respect and be present in worship activities authentically (not a requirement to believe specific things, only to be present and engaged)
Become certified in and support Safe Church practices (training is paid)
Become certified in and support Save Serve practices (training is paid)
