- Under general supervision by a physician, the athletic trainer (AT) will provide athletic training and clinical supports services in sports medicine and orthopedic practice.
- These may include but are not limited to: patient intake and rooming, obtaining a patient history, performing a physical exam, documentation in the electronic health record, patient education, casting and splinting application, durable medical equipment services , providing pre- and post-operative care for patients and assisting manage the clinical in-basket.
- If the AT also has obtained the Orthopedic Technologist Certification (OTC) he or she will also provide surgical assisting duties as directed by the orthopedic surgeon.
- These may include but are not limited to: patient positions, draping, using sterile techniques, passing of instruments, tissue retraction, management working portals and arthroscopic devices, graft preparation, skin closure and application of post-operative dressings as well as any other task delineated by the OTC scope of practice.
- The AT will also function as a liaison between physician’s and local athletes at collegiate, high school youth programs.
