Marine Mechanic / Boat Systems Technician (Diesel Focus)

Position OverviewLocation: Rockland, MaineWe are seeking a reliable and motivated Marine Mechanic / Boat Systems Technician to join our team. This role focuses on engine maintenance, system diagnostics, and full-vessel troubleshooting.While the ideal candidate may have broad experience, we are open to individuals with varying skill levels. The priority is a strong foundation in mechanical work and system troubleshooting, with the willingness to learn and grow within the marine industry.Key ResponsibilitiesEngine Maintenance & RepairPerform routine inspections and daily checks:Oil, fuel, coolant, and hydraulic fluid levelsConduct scheduled maintenance:Oil and filter changes (engine, transmission, hydraulic systems)Air and fuel filter replacementsRepair and replace engine components:Alternators, starters, belts, and related systemsDiagnostics & Troubleshooting (Core Focus)Analyze and interpret troubleshooting charts and service manualsDiagnose mechanical and onboard system issues using tools such as:VoltmeterPressure gaugesDial indicatorsMechanical stethoscopesIdentify root causes and perform effective repairs across engine and vessel systemsMarine Systems (Core Focus)Service and troubleshoot onboard systems:Freshwater, gray water, and blackwater systems12V electrical and battery systemsExhaust and auxiliary systemsSupport seasonal operations:Commissioning (spring preparation)Decommissioning (winterization)Fuel SystemsDiagnose and service fuel systems:Common rail and rotary injection systemsPerform timing adjustments:Flow timing and pump calibrationSet timing specifications:Locate Top Dead Center (TDC)Ensure proper fuel pump timingNice to Have: Engine Rebuild & OverhaulDisassemble and inspect engines and componentsMeasure wear and tolerances:Bearings, crankshaft, camshaft, pistons, cylinder wallsPerform valve and head work:Reset valve seats, grind valves, measure tolerancesReplace worn or damaged components:Gaskets, bearings, pistons, sleeves, springsReassemble and test engines:Verify performance, ensure no leaks, confirm proper operationHydraulic Systems (Limited Scope)Basic identification of hydraulic components:Pumps, motors, hoses, and fittingsPerform minor repairs or assist with hydraulic work as needed (Note: Hydraulic work is a smaller portion of this role and not a primary focus.)QualificationsRequired:Solid mechanical background (diesel, automotive, heavy equipment, or marine)Experience with engine maintenance and troubleshootingAbility to use diagnostic tools and interpret technical informationWillingness to learn marine systemsInterest in long-term career growthPreferred:2–5+ years of relevant experienceMarine or boatyard experienceFamiliarity with vessel systems (electrical, plumbing, onboard systems)Experience with engine rebuildsCertifications (e.g., ABYC) or willingness to obtainCompensation & BenefitsCompetitive hourly pay ($25–$35/hr based on experience)Overtime opportunities (seasonal)Health, dental, and vision insurancePaid time off:1 week vacation (negotiable)3 sick daysTraining and certification supportIdeal CandidateStrong in engine maintenance and troubleshootingComfortable working across multiple boat systemsMechanically inclined with a problem-solving mindsetReliable and team-orientedLooking for a long-term role, not short-term employmentWhy Join UsHands-on work across a wide range of marine systemsTraining and mentorship from experienced mechanicsFlexible approach to candidate skill levelsStable, team-oriented work environment
