You’ll operate state-owned towing vessels, work with a professional marine crew, and help ensure vessels and equipment are properly maintained and ready for service. This position is ideal for someone who is safety-minded, dependable, comfortable working independently, and able to make sound decisions when conditions change. Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED)\n\nNOTE:\nPossession of a current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) will be required at the time of appointment.\n\nJob Specification\n\nThe official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here.\n\nJob Duties and Other Information\n\nJob Duties:\n\nOperate state-owned towing vessels used to push, pull, or haul equipment and materials in support of LADOTD marine operations.\nMonitor and perform routine maintenance on vessel engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, pumps, sanitation systems, and other marine equipment.\nMaintain vessel logs and required reports while safely operating marine radios, radar, navigation, and emergency equipment.\nServe as a lookout and support the crew in maintaining safe vessel operations, including emergency drills, refueling procedures, and disaster response activities.\n\nPosition Specific Details:\nAppointment Type: Probational, Promotional, Job Appointment or Detail to Special Duty.\nCareer Progression: May be filled as a as Ferryboat Operator 1, 2, or 3 depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s).\nCompensation: Below is the starting Hourly rate and premium pay amount for each level.
