About the Role: The Air Force Test Center is looking for a Full-Time Sheet Metal Mechanic (Aircraft) (WG-3806-08T11) to work at the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) in the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), at the 412th Test Wing, 412th Maintenance Squadron/Fabrication Flight, (MXMF) at Edwards Air Force Base, CA. To develop templates for, or lay out, contrast, assemble, and install unconventional, one-of-a-kind aircraft sheet metal items, systems, or apparatus for a one-time project or in support of experimental or testing activities for the sheet metal and plastic fabricator work portion of the Structures Section in the Fabrication Flight. Location: Edwards, CA (Edwards Air Force Base) Typical 2024 salary range: $72,962 - $102,534 per year (includes locality) Telework Information: Position not eligible for telework Travel Requirements: Up to 25% travel possible Direct Hire Authority: NO 6-MONTH WAIT! Recently retired and/or retiring from MILITARY service ARE eligible for immediate appointment for AFTC positions. The 180-day waiting period has been waived for AFTC to hire recently retired and/or retiring service members. Desired Skills: Work well with military and civilian personnel. Follow work direction. Ability to work in confined spaces and wear respirator. Ability to use ladders and stands to access maintenance areas. Major Duties: - Plans and lays out work with a minimum of accompanying information, to fabricate, manufacture, assemble, and install unconventional, one-of-a-kind aircraft sheet metal items for a one-time project or in support of experimental testing activities. Modifies aircraft frame segments, such as metal structural members and reinforcements. Performs major structural repair of damaged aircraft. Plans, lays out, manufactures, modifies and/or repairs a variety of aircraft parts, components and forming aids consisting of transparent plastics, plastic silicone, and rubber compounds, fiberglass mat and solid laminates, metal and fiberglass bonded honeycomb, composites and wood materials. Fabricate aircraft tubing using manual and automated bending apparatus. Qualifications/Requirements: U.S. Citizenship Obtain & maintain Security clearance This is a designated Drug Testing Position Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical Knowledge of planning, layout, and aircraft sheet metal and composite repair, manufacturing to devise complex templates and patterns, and to shape, construct, and assemble objects with combined shapes such as rectangular, cylindrical, tapered, or truncated cones, using the least number of seams and amount of metal; and of parallel-line and radial-line development, and triangulation. Knowledge of wide variety of metals and how their characteristics fit the needs and requirements of projects where information or guidelines are minimal. Ability to form metal for repair of aircraft parts and structures that vary in size, shape and thickness. Ability to form plastics and composite laminates for repair and modification of aircraft parts and structures that varies in size, shape and thickness. Knowledge of safety and environmental standards, regulations, and requirements.
