Water Reuse Engineer
Brown and Caldwell (BC) is seeking a Water Reuse Engineer to join our growing Reuse practice and help our clients increase environmental sustainability and the resilience of their water supplies. This position is open to a wide range of skill sets, including collaboration with clients to plan water reuse systems, navigation of the reuse permitting and compliance process, and the development of innovative treatment solutions for the design and implementation of reuse facilities across the West. The ability to conduct analyses, modeling and designs and to produce engineering deliverables like reports, plans, specifications, and recommendations with minimal supervision is critical to the success of this role.Locations: Irvine, CA; Sacramento, CA; Salt Lake City, UT.ResponsibilitiesIndependently perform technical analyses and evaluate sustainable environmental engineering solutions.Prepare, review, and finalize technical reports, calculations, and design documentation.Design environmental protection systems and infrastructure in accordance with regulatory and project requirements.Develop facility, watershed, or resource management plans with defined scopes and objectives.Analyze complex data sets and ensure technical accuracy and regulatory compliance of deliverables.Provide technical support for permitting, regulatory approvals, and coordination with vendors and stakeholders.Support project execution through collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.Additional Project ExamplesWork closely with clients and project delivery teams in the western US to execute water reuse projects, programs, and studies.Develop into a technical leader on water reuse projects.Assist in developing and preparing process design drawings, specifications, calculations, plans, models, and other technical deliverables for a variety of water reuse projects.Coordinate, advise, and conduct testing of equipment, including established and novel treatment technologies related to water reuse.Collaborate with BC research and innovation on applicable technologies and projects.Read, summarize, and prepare technical reports regarding water quality and regulatory requirements.Evaluate treatment approaches for water quality parameters, including constituents of emerging concern.Prepare and deliver presentations to clients and for internal professional meetings.Provide technical expertise to support business development pursuits and demonstrate a willingness to learn how to lead these types of pursuits.Participate in professional organizations.May provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow within their roles.Skills and CompetenciesProficient knowledge of environmental engineering principles, methods, and regulatory frameworks.Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.Ability to manage assigned tasks independently and meet project deadlines.Clear and effective communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.ExperienceTypically, a minimum of 5 years of related work experience in environmental engineering or related field.Experience in preparation of plans and permit applications for environmental projects.Prior experience in guidance and development of less experienced colleagues.Typically certified in the SMS Framework, and progressing through the SMS competencies.Preferred Experience7+ years of progressively responsible work experience in the wastewater, drinking water, and/or reuse industry, including familiarity with the following:Water reuse system planning.Water reuse regulations and permitting.Feasibility and conceptual studies of water reuse systems.Facility master planning, modeling, advanced data analysis.Advanced water treatment design.Experience with at least one of the following:Full-scale or pilot plants, including some advanced treatment unit processes such as MBR, MF, RO, UV, ozone, GAC, BAC, or IX.Permitting of water reuse facilities and systems.Development of water reuse planning documents.Experience working and communicating directly with clients.EducationA bachelor's degree in environmental engineering or related field is required.Has achieved or is working towards achieving professional license.Preferred EducationA master's degree in environmental engineering or related field.A Professional Engineer license.Salary RangeThe anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education.
