NEEC's commissioning team ensures that every system operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with the highest industry standards.\r\nAbout the Role\r\nThe Protection & Control (P&C) Technician is responsible for the installation, wiring, testing, and maintenance of protection, control, and automation systems in high-voltage substations. This role supports commissioning engineers and ensures that all protection schemes and control equipment are installed and operating correctly in accordance with design specifications, utility standards, and safety requirements.\r\nThe position requires strong hands-on technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely and effectively in field environments across multiple project sites.\r\nKey Responsibilities\r\nAssist in the installation and wiring of protection and control panels, relays, and related substation equipment.\r\nPerform functional testing, point-to-point checks, and verification of control circuits, alarms, and interlocks.\r\nSupport commissioning and energization activities under the supervision of P&C and commissioning engineers.\r\nConduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting of protective relays, breakers, transformers, and SCADA systems.\r\nOperate and maintain test equipment such as multimeters, relay test sets (Omicron, Doble, Megger), and insulation testers.\r\nVerify relay settings, logic, and tripping schemes against design documentation.\r\nDocument test results, issues, and resolutions in detailed field and commissioning reports.\r\nFollow all NEEC and client safety procedures , including lockout/tagout (LOTO), PPE use, and substation entry requirements.\r\nWork collaboratively with engineers, construction teams, and utility representatives to ensure project success.\r\nQualifications\r\nAssociate degree, technical certification, or equivalent field experience in Electrical Engineering Technology or a related discipline.\r\nMinimum 2–5 years of experience in P&C field testing, relay maintenance, or substation operations.\r\nFamiliarity with protective relays (SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens) and their associated software tools.\r\nAbility to read and interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics.\r\nProficiency with electrical and electronic testing tools and basic relay testing procedures.\r\nStrong understanding of AC/DC control circuits, grounding, and communication systems.\r\nExcellent attention to detail and ability to work independently in the field.\r\nWillingness to travel to project sites across the U.S. and work in substation environments.\r\nPreferred Skills\r\nExperience supporting utility or EPC substation projects.\r\nWorking knowledge of DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850 communication protocols.\r\nFamiliarity with SCADA/RTU systems and data point verification.\r\nOSHA 10/30 certification and NFPA 70E electrical safety training preferred.\r\nCPR and First Aid certifications are a plus.\r\nThis is a field-based position that involves travel to substations and renewable project sites. The role includes work in outdoor environments and around high-voltage electrical equipment.
