The Project Engineer will work on managing and completing complex design projects primarily involved with commercial, residential, and municipal structures. They will be responsible for planning, analyzing, and designing geotechnical components of a project, as well as providing support for construction observation and materials testing services. This may include performing field inspections, coordinating and managing field projects, reviewing daily inspection reports, evaluating field and laboratory test results, and communicating observations and recommendations to clients, contractors, and project teams. They will use relevant software to perform engineering analysis and develop plans and reports. Project Engineers are required to have a PE license or the ability to obtain it within 6 months of employment and will review project recommendations and designs.\n\nProject Engineers are paid an annual salary between $80,000.00 and $100,000.00 plus discretionary bonuses. Retirement benefits include a 401K and Profit Sharing Plan.\n\nSupervisory Responsibilities\n\nTrain and supervise staff engineers and field engineering technicians.\n\nDuties/Responsibilities\n\nProvide direct engineering service and project management with full understanding of, and consistent use of, in‑house project management tools and the ability to successfully delegate project responsibilities to other staff.\n\nTrain, mentor, and provide technical guidance to staff engineers and field engineering technicians performing COMT‑related work.\n\nPerform field inspections and construction observations to evaluate conformance with project plans, specifications, geotechnical recommendations, and applicable standards.\n\nReview daily field reports, inspection documentation, and materials testing results for completeness, accuracy, and consistency with project requirements.\n\nPerform engineering analysis on residential, commercial, and municipal projects to provide project recommendations to clients.\n\nCollaborate with other engineers and architects to develop coordinated designs.\n\nConduct studies involving geotechnical investigations for foundations, slope stability, pavement design and earth retention.\n\nPerform testing and sampling on various geotechnical materials.\n\nPrepare project documentation including plans, reports and letter for clients.\n\nLog borings for geotechnical studies.\n\nPerform and review field and lab tests for use in engineering analysis and reports.\n\nPlan field and subsurface investigations.\n\nCreate, prepare and update project proposals and technical reports.\n\nReview and stamp recommendations, calculations, reports, letters, and plans created by staff engineers for delivery to clients.\n\nCreate and maintain client relationships.\n\nAttend project meetings.\n\nOther duties and responsibilities as assigned.\n\nExcellent computer skills and ability to learn new software in a timely manner.\n\nExcellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.\n\nExcellent knowledge of current code requirements as appropriate for position.\n\nExperience with AutoCAD.\n\nAbility to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.\n\nUnderstanding of construction means and methods.\n\nAbility to communicate and work well with a team.\n\nIncreasing maturity and soundness of judgement in decision making and solving project‑related problems and managing complex projects.\n\nEducation and Experience\n\nB.S. in Civil or related engineering field, M.S. preferred.\n\nAt least 5 years of experience within specified field.\n\nCurrent Professional Engineer License in the state of employment or ability to obtain a license in 6 months of employment.\n\nProlonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.\n\nMust be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.\n\nAbility to walk around construction sites with uneven and varying terrain.\n\nAbility to work outside in all weather conditions.\n\nOffer Contingencies\n\nVerification of your right to work in the United States, as demonstrated by your completion of the I‑9 form upon hire and your submission of acceptable documentation (as noted on the I‑9 form) verifying your identity and work authorization within three days of starting employment.\n\nSatisfactory completion of a drug test from a laboratory certified by Montana and chosen (and paid for) by CTL|Thompson, Inc.
