Health Information Management Director Role Type Permanent / Direct Hire Level Location Salary Range $137,000 $163,000 per annum Relocation Not provided candidates must live locally or relocate within 45 days About the Role We are seeking an experienced Health Information Management (HIM) Director to lead and develop the HIM department of an acute care hospital in Northern New Mexico. This is a senior leadership role reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, with full departmental oversight covering clinical documentation, compliance, information technology, staffing, and budget management. This is an on-site, permanent position. Candidates must reside in the Los Alamos, NM area or be fully committed to relocating within 45 days of offer acceptance. Key Responsibilities Direct all HIM department activities, resources, and operations to meet departmental and organisational objectives Develop and implement departmental goals, plans, and standards aligned with clinical, administrative, legal, and ethical requirements Oversee patient care documentation, health information technologies, service levels, and complaint management Plan and manage staffing activities including hiring, orientation, performance evaluation, and continuing education Prepare, monitor, and evaluate departmental budgets; ensure operations remain within allocated funding Coordinate and oversee internal and external audits Ensure compliance with all applicable healthcare regulations, including HIPAA and Business Office Standards Foster a culture of professional growth and ensure the department's critical role in the care continuum Must-Have Requirements Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management or a related field (applicable work experience may be considered in lieu) Active RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) or RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) credential Comprehensive understanding of healthcare regulatory and compliance frameworks, including HIPAA Must live in the Los Alamos, NM area or be prepared to relocate within 45 days of offer acceptance Preferred Experience Prior HIM leadership experience in an acute care hospital setting Demonstrated experience training, developing, and evaluating HIM staff Familiarity with health information systems, EMR platforms, and coding compliance Strong analytical and problem-solving skills across complex, varied business situations Advanced communication skills able to present complex information to senior leadership and motivate teams Proficiency with healthcare IT systems, including EMR, spreadsheets, and data management tools Sound financial acumen: budget preparation, monitoring, and variance analysis Project planning and cross-functional organisation: able to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously Functional independence: able to set priorities, develop policies, and make decisions for the department Benefits & Compensation Medical Insurance Vision Insurance Life Insurance 401(k) with Company Match Paid Time Off Paid Family Leave Short & Long-Term Disability Tuition & Certification Assistance Loan Assistance Virtual & Mental Health Care Employee Discount Programs Additional benefits include higher education and certification tuition assistance, loan assistance, free gym memberships, virtual care appointments, mental health services, and an employee discount programme.
