This role will provide laboratory and experimental support across multiple R&D functions, including Discovery, Strain Development, Bioprocess Development, and Formulation Development. The ideal candidate is excited to work in a fast-paced biotechnology environment and enjoys contributing to a variety of scientific programs through high-quality laboratory execution, data collection, and operational support.\n\nThis position offers an opportunity to develop broad technical skills across microbial engineering, fermentation, analytical testing, and formulation sciences while supporting the advancement of innovative biological products.\n\nKEY RESPONSIBILITIES\nLaboratory Operations & Support\n\nPrepare media, buffers, reagents, and solutions according to established protocols.\n\nPour and prepare agar plates and maintain laboratory consumables inventory.\n\nSupport routine laboratory organization, cleanliness, and equipment maintenance.\n\nAssist with sample tracking, labeling, storage, and inventory management.\n\nFollow laboratory safety procedures and maintain accurate documentation.\n\nExperimental Execution\n\nExecute routine laboratory experiments under the guidance of scientists and engineers.\n\nSupport various research activities, including:\n\nmicrobial culture preparation, colony screening, and sample processing\n\nshake flask, bench-scale fermentation, and downstream processing activities\n\nformulation sample preparation, processing, and characterization experiments\n\nAccurately record experimental observations, data, and deviations.\n\nAssay & Analytical Support\n\nPerform routine analytical and biological assays following established methods.\n\nCollect, organize, and report experimental data in a timely manner.\n\nSupport assay development, validation, and troubleshooting efforts.\n\nMaintain laboratory records and electronic data files according to company standards.\n\nTeam Collaboration\n\nWork closely with scientists and engineers across multiple technical functions.\n\nContribute to project execution through reliable laboratory support and attention to detail.\n\nParticipate in team meetings and communicate experimental progress and observations.\n\nSupport continuous improvement initiatives that increase laboratory efficiency and data quality.\n\nPROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS\nRequired\n\nBachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or a related scientific discipline.\n\n0–3 years of laboratory experience in an academic, industrial, or internship setting, level commensurate with education and experience\n\nFamiliarity with basic microbiology, molecular biology, or biochemical laboratory techniques.\n\nStrong organizational skills and attention to detail.\n\nAbility to follow protocols and maintain accurate records.\n\nAbility to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.\n\nPreferred\n\nExperience with microbial culture techniques and aseptic laboratory practices.\n\nExperience preparing media, buffers, and laboratory reagents.\n\nFamiliarity with fermentation, analytical assays, or formulation development.\n\nExperience using electronic laboratory notebooks or laboratory data management systems.\n\nExperience working in a biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or industrial research environment.\n\nKey Competencies\n\nLaboratory execution\n\nAttention to detail\n\nData collection and documentation\n\nScientific curiosity\n\nTeamwork and communication\n\nTime management and organization\n\nAdaptability and willingness to learn\n\nPhysical Requirements\n\nAbility to work safely in a laboratory environment.\n\nAbility to lift and transport laboratory materials up to 25 pounds.\n\nAbility to stand for extended periods while conducting laboratory work.\n\nThis role is designed as an entry point into biotechnology research and development and provides opportunities for growth into specialized roles within strain engineering, bioprocess development, formulation development, analytical sciences, and technical operations.\n\nCambridge, MA\n\nABOUT FLAGSHIP PIONEERING\nFlagship Pioneering invents and builds platform companies, each with the potential for multiple products that transform human health, sustainability and beyond.
