You will be a large part of the design process from a blank page through to a running machine. That covers concept, analysis, detailed design, working with fabricators, assembly, leak checking, troubleshooting and iteration. The team is small, so you will work directly with the founders and be given considerable amounts of responsibility.\n\n*What you will do*\n\n* Design vacuum vessels and high-temperature assemblies, including welded boundaries, seals, feedthroughs and thermal management.\n* Engineer systems that safely handle reactive and hazardous chemicals, with careful attention to material compatibility.\n* Integrate the electronics that run the equipment: heaters, sensors, instrumentation, power and control wiring.\n* Manage outside machine shops and welders, and do hands-on assembly and testing yourself.\n* Write test plans, run the tests, and turn the results into the next design revision.\n\n*What we are looking for*\n\n* A degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, plus several years of hands-on hardware experience.\n* Experience with hands on projects with involvement throughout the process and a passion for engineering.\n* Direct experience designing or operating vacuum systems.\n* Experience working with chemicals in an engineering setting, and a serious attitude toward safety.\n* Working knowledge of electronics and instrumentation. You should be able to wire, debug and specify them.\n* Self-motivation. You will see what needs doing and do it.\n* Comfort with a startup pace. The hours can be long and our team is extremely close. You will have a large part in the culture that is built up within the company.\n* Fluent in 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or similar. You can take a part from concept model to a complete assembly.\n* Able to produce fabrication drawings a machine shop can build from without a phone call. That includes proper tolerances, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and weld symbols.\n* Comfortable with engineering analysis and independent engineering thought processes.\n* Understanding how to design with manufacturing in mind.\n\n*Location and travel*\n\nThe role is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, and allows some remote work, particularly during early design phases. Building and commissioning hardware happens in person. You should expect travel to other company and supplier sites. Some stretches of the build and test schedule may require a weeks to months in a temporary location.\n\n*Compensation*\n\nThe salary is $120,000 - $180,000 per year plus stock in the company.\n\nThe company will provide full health insurance, dental insurance, and eye insurance.\n\n*To apply*\n\nSend your resume and a short note about the hardest piece of hardware you have built to.
