Under the direct supervision of a surgeon, performs first, second or third assistant tasks during an intra-operative procedure to include: providing exposure, retracts to expose anatomy without causing undue pressure on organs and tissues, performs surgical wound repair technique(s) and controls blood loss during cardiac surgery. May be called upon to perform duties in Main OR during normal working hours when not in conflict with Cardiovascular OR responsibilities.  Essential Functions:Serves as the surgical assistant on assigned cardiac surgery cases. Functions in the scrub role as assigned.   Under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon, handles tissue, provides exposure, uses instruments, sutures, and provides hemostasis, performs wound closure and knot tying, irrigates wound site, uses power equipment and stapling devices.  Performs surgical hand scrub, following Surgical Scrub Policy and Procedure. Gowns and gloves self and others, following gowning and gloving policy and procedure.  Assists surgeon or scrub person in draping patient to establish the sterile field. Does so in accordance with AORN Standards and Recommended Practices and established departmental policies.  Assists scrub personnel and surgeon in applying dressings as requested.  Shares responsibility for patient safety at all times. Maintains an environment free of obstacles and hazards that could result in injuries to personnel and patients.  This document is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, skills, duties, requirements, or working conditions associated with the job. Employees may be required to perform other job-related duties as required by their supervisor, subject to reasonable accommodation.  Education:High school diploma or equivalent (required)    Completion of a Surgical Assistant Program (required)  Required Licensing & Certifications:BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (preferred upon hire, must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care)   Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA), or National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) (required) (if hired in Virginia prior to July 1, 2020, preferred; if hired in Cincinnati, preferred).     If employed in Virginia, registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Assistant (required)  Experience:Two years’ experience in an Operating Room (required)    Experience in cardiovascular operating room (preferred; required for RSFH)    Skills & Abilities:Hard/Tech/Clinical Skills: Monitor patient conditions during treatment  Completes specific, routine task  Requires basic reading, writing, or simple arithmetic skill  May operate basic equipment/machinery.  Ability to follow instructions   Assists with performing circulator skills and tasks  Soft/Interpersonal Skills: Attention to detail  Critical thinking  Teamwork  Conflict resolution  Active listening  Relationship building  Demonstrates a caring attitude and intentional caring behaviors in interpersonal interactions and patient/family care.  Communicates clearly all pertinent patient information to other members of the health care team.  Possess Surgical Conscience   Anticipate Needs   Flexible   Takes direction  Able to work under pressure   Professionalism   Move with a sense of urgency   Training:NoneAs a Bon Secours Mercy Health associate, you're part of a Mission that matters.
