Through the efforts of over 400 dedicated staff members serving over 10M building square feet and 1100 acres, Facilities Services includes the asset management program, custodial services, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations, and the Cal Zero Waste program.\n\nPosition Summary\nThis position involves planning, organizing, coordinating and performing activities supporting exterior hard and soft scapes, including gardening, planting, landscape, grounds, playing fields, tree maintenance, erosion control, pest management, exterior fire control projects, irrigation repair and maintenance, grounds equipment repair and maintenance.\n\nResponsibilities\n\nTrain the landscape / groundskeeping staff to maintain an orderly, safe, and efficient grounds operation.\n\nTrain staff on landscape maintenance, horticultural and arboricultural best practices.\n\nTrain leads on prioritization of servicing landscapes.\n\nApply knowledge in the care and use of power equipment and other landscape/groundskeeping tools.\n\nMaintain proper inventory needs and purchase inventory.\n\nDirect subordinates to complete assignments using established guidelines, procedures, and policies.\n\nEnsure safety, hazardous materials and landscape / groundskeeping policies and procedures are adhered to by staff.\n\nEnforce biohazardous materials and equipment policies and procedures.\n\nEnsure that staff complete required mandatory training.\n\nResponsible for performance management of direct reports.\n\nReview and approve timecards and requests for time off.\n\nConduct annual performance reviews.\n\nHave a general understanding of supervising employees in a unionized environment.\n\nMaintain scheduling within prescribed budgetary guidelines.\n\nMay assist with budget planning and maintenance and provide input on landscape design.\n\nMay be responsible for coordinating programs (water abatement, weed abatement & irrigation) with various municipalities, governmental organizations, etc.\n\nMay be required to operate vehicles.\n\nRequired Qualifications\n\nWorking knowledge of landscape/groundskeeping services.\n\nWorking verbal and written communication skills in the English language, including active listening, flexibility, critical thinking, and the ability to multitask and ensure effective time management.\n\nWorking decision‑making and reasoning skills, and the ability to develop original ideas to solve problems and conduct operations analysis and quality control analysis.\n\nEffective interpersonal and leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.\n\nAbility to review the design of the landscape in the planning stages.\n\nSolid computer application skills.\n\nAbility to learn Maximo.\n\n3 years of experience in a lead or project lead role.\n\n5 years in the field of Horticulture or Arboriculture.\n\nExperience in a unionized environment in a lead or management role.\n\nStrong horticultural background (includes plant & pest identification, plant diseases, knowledge of hydrology zones, etc.).\n\nMust be able to stand for long periods of time in all different weather conditions.\n\nAble to frequently bend/crouch.\n\nAble to frequently climb stairs/hillsides and walk on uneven ground and plant landscapes.\n\nBachelor's degree in landscape/horticulture and/or equivalent training/experience.\n\nPreferred Qualifications\n\nHigh school diploma or equivalent certification.\n\nAcademic preparation in horticulture.\n\nSalary & Benefits\nUnder California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement.
