Summer Camp Counselor at Vanderbilt University
Position Overview
We are seeking current Vanderbilt University students or recent grads to join our summer camp staff.
Help us create an unforgettable experience for high school students as they explore the world of medicine through Outset at Vanderbilt.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Supervision of Campers
Supervise high school students in daily life on campus (walking between dorms, dining halls, and academic buildings—expect lots of walking!)
Monitor camper well-being and enforce Outset rules, campus policies, and safety procedures in accordance with Minor Protection Office
Be the first point of contact for camper roommate issues, minor behavior items, and other daily concerns. Escalate more serious issues to leadership staff with clear, prompt communication
Activities & Engagement
Lead small group games, icebreakers, and team-building activities
Assist with larger group activities both on and off campus (field games, bowling, movies, baseball games, etc.)
Support daily setup, supervision, and breakdown of activities
Camper Arrival & Departure
Greet and support families during check-in and check-out (meet & greet, luggage assistance, parent communication, running check-in tables, leading tours and games)
Participate in or lead airport pickups, ensuring safe and welcoming transportation for campers
Communication & Reporting
Maintain a high level of active communication—overcommunicate about camper issues, incidents/injuries/behavior, and shared staff responsibilities
Schedule & Time Off
Daily schedule: approx. 7:30 AM – 11:30 PM (with at least 1.5 hours of personal time off daily)
Time off: Friday 6:00 PM – Sunday 12:30 PM (~40-42 consecutive hours off)
Compensation & Benefits
$500/week + paid training
Housing provided in campus dorm rooms
Meals are provided during camp (Sunday dinner through Friday lunch), and during your time off, you will be provided with a $50 meal stipend
Laundry facilities available (camp provides detergent & dryer sheets)
Snacks & drinks available throughout the summer
All off-campus activities covered (staff participation encouraged when supervision allows)
CPR certification/refresher course provided on site
Qualifications
Preferred 21+ years old
Prior overnight camp counselor experience strongly preferred
Strong ability to supervise, support, and connect with high school students
Comfort handling behavior management at the “light” level and escalating serious issues appropriately
Willingness to learn and use tech tools
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Outgoing, adaptable, and responsible personality

About Outset
Outset (joinoutset.com) is an immersive college-prep program for high school students, designed to give teens a taste of campus life while building friendships, independence, and focus. Our 2026 summer program will run at Vanderbilt University and is tailored for students interested in the pre-med/pre-health path.
Our counselors live on campus in the dorms, supervise campers, and create a safe, fun, and structured environment. This role is intense, rewarding, and community-driven. Ideal for someone who loves working with teens and thrives in a dynamic setting.
