The following outlines representative work performed within each functional area.Sanitary Sewer CrewPerform skilled maintenance, repair, and inspection of sanitary sewer systems, including mains, manholes, lift stations, and related infrastructureOperate specialized equipment (e.g., vactor trucks, CCTV inspection equipment) to support inspection and preventative maintenanceTroubleshoot and resolve routine and moderately complex system issues to maintain reliable wastewater serviceRespond to emergency calls, including sewer backups and system failuresDocument work activities and support regulatory complianceStormwater CrewPerform maintenance, repair, and inspection of stormwater systems, including catch basins, pipelines, and drainage structuresSupport water quality efforts through system cleaning and maintenance activitiesIdentify and address drainage issues to reduce flooding risksOperate equipment to maintain system functionality and respond to storm eventsDocument work activities and support environmental complianceWater CrewPerform skilled maintenance and repair of water distribution systems, including mains, valves, hydrants, and service linesSupport installation and replacement of water infrastructureIdentify and assist in resolving leaks, pressure issues, and system deficienciesRespond to emergency water system issues, including main breaksSupport water quality and safety standards through proper procedures and documentationStreets CrewPerform maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way, and traffic control infrastructureOperate equipment to support roadway maintenance, including asphalt repair and surface treatmentsInstall and maintain traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markingsRespond to roadway hazards and emergency conditionsSupport safe and effective traffic control in work zonesShared ResponsibilitiesIn addition to crew-specific assignments, all Maintenance Technician II positions share the following responsibilities:Perform work with increased independence using established procedures, standards, and safety practicesOperate tools and equipment safely and effectivelySupport team operations through communication, coordination, and reliabilityIdentify issues and contribute to problem-solving and continuous improvementMaintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and system conditionsRespond to after-hours and emergency call-outs as requiredKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesRoutinely works independently and completes assigned work without direct supervision.Demonstrates a strong working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and utility systems relevant to assigned crew functions.Proficient in the use of inspection, diagnostic, and repair tools and equipment.Holds additional required or preferred credentials, including both general and crew-specific certifications.Begins mentoring, coaching, and sharing technical knowledge with Maintenance Technician I staff.Works under general supervision and is trusted to perform tasks independently.Independently completes work orders, inspections, and related documentation accurately and timely.Performs work safely, consistently follows established safety guidelines, and uses required PPE without direction in routine situations.Completes assigned work in a timely manner, generally meeting or exceeding established deadlines.Demonstrates the ability to independently set up and maintain appropriate traffic control zones.Selection CriteriaAdvancement process is not automatic. Duties may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, traffic, equipment, uneven terrain, and other operational hazards. Work may require prolonged standing or walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and heavy lifting, as well as the operation of tools, equipment, or vehicles. Some assignments may involve working in confined or restricted spaces.Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, emergency response, or on-call assignments based on operational needs. This rate is increased to a maximum of 184 hours per year, depending upon length of service.Sick Leave: Sick leave is accrued by regular full-time City employees at the rate of 8 hours per month.Holidays: Most City employees receive 11 paid holidays (at 8 hours each) annually, one of which is a floating holiday.Retirement: Eligible City employees are mandatory members of the State of Washington Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). New employees have a choice between PERS Plan 2 and PERS Plan 3. Both the City and the employee contribute to the system. The state retirement system provides retirement benefits and also benefits for people who are disabled. Employees leaving City service prior to retirement may withdraw their total contribution with interest.Teamsters Trust Retirement Program: Under the current Teamster's contract, the City pays a contribution of $3.65 for each hour for which compensation is paid into the Western Conference of Teamsters Trust Pension Fund.Deferred Compensation: Employees may participate in by making employee contributions to this tax-deferred retirement account.Insurance Plans: Each employee in this bargaining unit is covered by full-family insurance, paid for by the City. This insurance includes comprehensive medical and dental and vision coverage.Group Life Insurance: The City provides a $30,000 policy through the Teamsters Trust with a $400.00 a week time loss benefit. An additional $10,000 life insurance is also provided through The Standard for each employee.Hours of Work: The normal work week is forty (40) hours, Monday through Friday. Crews work 4/10 hour shifts (Mon-Thurs or Tues-Friday).
