Communications Specialist

Position Title: Digital Communications SpecialistLocation: Dupont Circle, Washington DC 20009Duration: Full TimeJob Descriptions:This position has a strong focus on social media management, digital design (particularly in Canva), and content publishing, as well as supporting website updates and email production.Key Responsibilities:Social Media Management + Content PublishingDraft, schedule, and publish content across social media channelsMaintain and manage a centralized social media content calendarCoordinate social media requests across departments, ensuring alignment with messaging and prioritiesIdentify timely content opportunities (member highlights, program updates, advocacy, events, partner content)Monitor platform performance and contribute to monthly reportingDigital Design + Brand ApplicationServe as a central resource for digital design needs across the organization, ensuring consistent application of brand across all digital channels.Create and adapt digital assets using Canva (or similar tools), including:Social media graphicsEvent and program promotionsWeb graphics and bannersSimple digital flyers and one-pagersApply brand guidelines consistently across all visual outputsSupport staff in developing visually cohesive materials aligned with organizational standardsEnsure visual content meets accessibility best practices (contrast, readability, etc.)Website Content Publishing SupportBuild and publish web pages in CMS using provided content and directionFormat content for clarity, readability, and consistency across pagesSupport routine website updates, including swapping images, updating text, and maintaining page accuracyAssist with ongoing website cleanup efforts, including broken links, formatting fixes, and accessibility improvementsEmail + Newsletter ProductionDraft and format newsletters, announcements, and digital communicationsSupport email production workflows including proofreading, link-checking, and schedulingMaintain templates and recurring elements to improve efficiency and consistencyDigital Operations + CoordinationServe as a central point of coordination for incoming digital communications requests (social, web, email, design)Help maintain communications calendars and workflows in AsanaSupport tracking of media mentions and assist in maintaining records of external visibilityHelp ensure consistency in formatting, branding, and accessibility across digital outputs Analytics + Reporting SupportPull and organize data from platforms such as Google Analytics and social media insightsSupport monthly reporting across website, social media, and email channelsTrack basic performance trends and flag notable insightsQualifications:Required:2–3 years of experience in communications, digital media, marketing, or a related fieldStrong writing and editing skills, with attention to detail and clarityExperience managing or contributing to social media accountsExperience using Canva or similar design tools, with strong visual judgmentStrong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlinesComfort working across multiple digital platforms (social, web, email)Preferred:Experience working in nonprofit, higher education, or mission-driven organizationsFamiliarity with content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress, Kentico, or similarFamiliarity with email marketing platforms (Mailchimp, Campaign Monitor, etc.)Basic understanding of accessibility best practices for digital contentFamiliarity with Google Analytics or other reporting tools
