Senior Indirect Tax Accountant (Oil & Gas Company)

Overview This role prepares complex sales and use tax and property tax returns, conducts technical tax research, evaluates non‑routine transactions, and supports process improvements. The position also mentors junior staff and helps ensure compliance with evolving state and local tax laws. Experience with indirect tax in multiple states—especially in the Southwest and Mountain regions—is preferred.Key ResponsibilitiesPrepare and review complex sales & use tax and property tax returnsResearch tax law and document positions for complex transactionsReview work prepared by junior staff and provide coachingPrepare tax analyses, reports, and support for compliance and accrualsManage exemption certificates and resolve non‑routine issues with vendors and internal teamsAssist with audits, notices, and audit defenseParticipate in process‑improvement initiatives and departmental projectsSkills & Technical KnowledgeStrong analytical and tax research abilitiesClear written and verbal communication skillsExcellent organization and time‑managementHigh accuracy and attention to detailProficiency in Excel and ability to learn new systemsExperience with ERP systems and tax software preferredEducation & ExperienceBachelor’s degree in tax, accounting, law, or related field (master’s preferred)Minimum 5 years of relevant experience (or 8+ years in lieu of degree)Indirect tax or oil & gas experience preferredProfessional certifications (CPA, CIA, CFE, etc.) are a plus
