With over 400 dedicated staff, serving over 10 million square feet and 1100 acres, the department includes asset management, custodial services, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations, and the Cal Zero Waste program.\r\nPosition Summary\r\nThe Utilities Maintenance group is responsible for the operation and maintenance of campus utilities (steam, high voltage, natural gas, water, and sewer) distribution. They perform preventive maintenance, repairs, emergency response, and regulatory compliance work. The high-voltage electricians operate and maintain the University's electric distribution system that receives high voltage power from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) and distributes it throughout the main Berkeley campus.\r\nApplication Review Date\r\nThe first review date for this job is: June 17, 2026.\r\nResponsibilities\r\nInspect, maintain, test, repair, operate, troubleshoot, and replace all 4160 V, 12 KV, and 115 KV apparatus on all campus sites.\r\nSwitch high voltage and prepare the switching procedures.\r\nMaintain high voltage equipment including switches, circuit breakers, transformers, relays, transmission lines, cables, and cable terminations.\r\nPerform high voltage relay calibration, cable splicing, and cable terminating.\r\nTroubleshoot control systems related to pumps and motors of various voltage supplies.\r\nCoordinate appropriate repairs with other trades at PP-CS.\r\nCo-ordinate shutdowns and maintain utilities and buildings in good working order with other trades.\r\nMaintain utilities support systems such as pumps, streetlights, and other electrical systems.\r\nRespond to high voltage requests, assist with fire alarm calls, and assist with SCADA installations.\r\nAdministrative Duties (10%)\r\nConsult with lead/supervisor/project superintendents on modification requirements and standards.\r\nInterpret prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts, and written descriptions of functions and project requirements.\r\nSupport maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments.\r\nKeep accurate work records and complete paperwork in a timely manner.\r\nServe as liaison with clients, relaying their needs to the appropriate department or superintendent.\r\nObtain materials and equipment as required.\r\nSafety (20%)\r\nAdhere to all University and departmental safety guidelines.\r\nAttend all job-related safety training.\r\nMaintain up-to-date knowledge of OSHA and NEC high voltage regulations and complete 40 hours of documented high voltage safety training.\r\nMaintain up-to-date knowledge of HVPPE, high voltage testing procedures, and high voltage equipment.\r\nOther (5%)\r\nPerform other duties as assigned.\r\nRequired Qualifications\r\nMust possess and maintain a California State Electrical License.\r\nMust have completed a five-year electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent.\r\nMust have three years of high voltage experience.\r\nMust have strong troubleshooting skills and be able to interpret complicated circuitry designs.\r\nMust be able to operate electrical machines, equipment, and hand and/or power tools for job tasks.\r\nMust be able to work in confined spaces and in high lifts.\r\nMust be able to lift 75-pound objects and maneuver heavier objects.\r\nMust possess a valid California driver's license and undergo pre-employment medical physical.\r\nMust be available to respond to emergencies, work on-call, rotating swing shift, and holidays.\r\nMust adhere to Facilities Services work rules and Code of Conduct.\r\nMust have excellent communication skills for interaction with the campus community in a multicultural environment.\r\nPreferred Qualifications\r\nCertification in Hard Splices and Pre-Formed Splice Kits issued by a licensed school or approved training program.\r\nStrong conduit installation abilities.\r\nStrong motor control skills.\r\nExperience with outdoor lighting systems.\r\nKnowledge of control systems related to pumps and motors.\r\nKnowledge of FS6 breakers, high and medium voltage breakers, and relays up to 600 V.\r\nKnowledge of HVPPE, HV testing procedures, and HV equipment.\r\nTraining on the use of high lifts and bucket trucks.\r\nSalary & Benefits\r\nFor information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University, please visit the University of California's Compensation & Benefits website.
