Employees in this class report to the Wastewater Plant Superintendent and help supervise plant operators, trainees, and maintenance workers. Work is performed under the supervision of the Wastewater Plant Superintendent.Job Description:DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESAssists with the supervisory functions and performs the operations of the wastewater treatment plant facility.Helps plan and organize the working schedule of subordinate personnel.Diagnoses and corrects problems pertaining to the plant operations.Performs and supervises the testing required by State and Federal agencies.Maintains quality and quantity controls and keeps daily records and logs of operations.Maintains and/or replaces equipment, pumps, motors, etc.Responsible for responding to public inquiries, problems/complaints, investigations, and resolutions regarding the wastewater system.Orders necessary equipment and supplies.Submits reports to other agencies concerned with the plant operations.Performs chemical analysis as necessary.Monitors and operates computers for alarms and proper operation of the wastewater treatment plant.QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Operations, services, and activities of a wastewater plant.Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.Supervise, organize, and review the daily work of assigned staff involved in wastewater plant operation, maintenance and repair.Select, train, and evaluate crew.Demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community.Able to establish and maintain a courteous working relationship with employees, officials and the public.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSHigh school or general education degree (GED) from an accredited institution is required.A considerable amount of experience in the operation of a wastewater plant, preferably with supervisory experience is desired.An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements except for licensure/certification requirements.LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSPossess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.Class "B" Operators License issued by the FDEP is required.Must be First Aid and CPR/AED certified or get certified within one (1) year of hire.Must be available for on-call work is requiredPREFERRED SKILLSCertified Class "A" Wastewater Plant Operator License issued by the FDEP is highly preferred.Two year College Degree is highly desirable.LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.REASONING ABILITYAbility to follow and apply common sense understanding, to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form.Ability to read and comprehend safety manuals, operation guides, instructions, letters, memos, journals, maps, work orders, schematics, professional journals, legal documents, blue prints, and financial reports.OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIESConsiderable knowledge of the techniques and practices in the operation of wastewater facilities.Understanding of basic chemistry and bacteriology as applicable to such operations is necessary.Ability to perform basic and advanced mathematical calculations accurately.Proficient in computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: This job requires finger dexterity, depth perception, and very heavy lifting and carrying walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, equipment operation and driving. The employee will work outside in various weather conditions.
