This position plays a key leadership role in organizational planning and collaborates across departments to align maintenance operations with service delivery goals.\n\nA strong emphasis is placed on leading and developing staff, fostering a culture of safety and accountability, and effectively managing a represented workforce within a collective bargaining environment.\n\nWages\n$85,000–$95,000, annually\n\nResponsibilities\n\nProvide strategic leadership and direction for all fleet and facility maintenance operations, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and service requirements.\n\nDevelop, implement, and continuously improve a comprehensive preventative maintenance program to maximize asset reliability and lifecycle performance.\n\nLead, supervise, and develop maintenance staff, including performance management, coaching, training, and succession planning.\n\nEstablish departmental priorities, allocate resources, and adjust workflows to meet operational demands efficiently.\n\nAdminister and interpret the Collective Bargaining Agreement; manage labor relations matters and participate in grievance processes as needed.\n\nFoster a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with safety programs, policies, and regulatory requirements.\n\nDevelop and manage the maintenance department’s operating and capital budgets; monitor expenditures and identify cost‑control opportunities.\n\nUtilize data, metrics, and maintenance management systems to track performance, identify trends, and drive continuous improvement.\n\nCollaborate with executive leadership and other departments on strategic initiatives, capital planning, and service planning efforts.\n\nOversee procurement planning for parts, materials, equipment, and contracted services in coordination with purchasing processes.\n\nSupport the development of vehicle and equipment specifications and long‑term asset replacement strategies.\n\nManage emergency response related to fleet and facility readiness, ensuring continuity of operations.\n\nBuild and maintain effective relationships with employees, union representatives, vendors, contractors, and regulatory agencies.\n\nPerform other duties as assigned.\n\nMinimum Qualifications\nEducation and Experience\n\nHigh school diploma or equivalent required; additional technical or management training preferred.\n\nMinimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in fleet or facilities maintenance, including leadership or supervisory responsibilities.\n\nExperience managing or supervising staff in a unionized or represented work environment is strongly preferred.\n\nExperience in public transit or a regulated environment preferred.\n\nEquivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.\n\nCertificates & Licenses\n\nPossession of, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire, a valid Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake and Passenger endorsements.\n\nMust maintain a driving record that is acceptable to the agency’s insurance carrier.\n\nAdditional professional certifications in maintenance management or fleet operations (e.g., ASE, CPM, or similar) are a plus but not required.\n\nKnowledge & Skills\n\nPrinciples of maintenance management, including preventative maintenance planning and asset lifecycle management.\n\nLeadership and supervisory practices, including employee development and performance management.\n\nLabor relations principles and experience working with collective bargaining agreements.\n\nBudget development, financial management, and resource planning.\n\nApplicable federal, state, and local regulations related to transit operations and maintenance.\n\nData‑driven decision making, including use of maintenance metrics and management systems.\n\nStrong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.\n\nAbility to think strategically while executing operational priorities.\n\nProficiency with maintenance management software and Microsoft Office Suite.\n\nPhysical & Work Environment\n\nPrimarily administrative and operational leadership role with regular presence in maintenance facilities.\n\nCombination of office and field environment with exposure to typical maintenance and transit operations conditions.\n\nAbility to lift and carry up to 25 pounds and operate standard office equipment.\n\nOccasional business travel may be required.\n\nDental, Vision, and Life insurance.\n\nPaid time off and holidays.\n\nRetirement plan with 5% employer contribution.\n\nConnect Transit is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
