PLC Programmer- Maintenance
Job Description
The PLC Programmer is responsible for designing, programming, troubleshooting, and maintaining programmable logic controller (PLC) systems and related automation equipment used in manufacturing operations. This role supports production efficiency, equipment reliability, food safety, and continuous improvement initiatives by ensuring automated systems operate safely and effectively.The PLC Programmer will work closely with Maintenance, Engineering, Operations, EHS, and external vendors to support automation projects, equipment upgrades, and system integrations.Have you got the right qualifications and skills for this job Find out below, and hit apply to be considered.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDesign, develop, program, and troubleshoot PLC and HMI systems for manufacturing equipment and production lines.Maintain and support existing automation systems to minimize downtime and improve operational performance.Diagnose and resolve electrical controls and automation issues on production equipment.Modify PLC logic to improve equipment functionality, efficiency, and reliability.Assist with startup, commissioning, and validation of new equipment and automation systems.Support integration between PLCs, SCADA systems, HMIs, sensors, drives, and manufacturing software platforms.Develop and maintain documentation including:PLC backupsElectrical schematicsNetwork diagramsProgram revisionsStandard operating proceduresCollaborate with Operations and Maintenance teams during equipment failures and continuous improvement initiatives.Ensure all automation systems comply with company safety standards, food safety requirements, and applicable regulations.Support preventive maintenance activities related to controls and automation systems.Assist with training maintenance technicians and operators on automated equipment operation and troubleshooting.Participate in capital projects, equipment upgrades, and plant automation initiatives.Maintain accurate records of system changes, troubleshooting activities, and project work.Provide on-call or off-hours support as needed for critical production issues.Required QualificationsAssociate’s degree or technical certification in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Industrial Technology, or related field preferred.Minimum of 3–5 years of PLC programming experience in a manufacturing environment.Strong knowledge of industrial automation systems and controls.Experience programming and troubleshooting PLC platforms such as:Rockwell Automation Allen-BradleySiemensMitsubishi ElectricOmronExperience with HMIs, VFDs, industrial networking, and SCADA systems.Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings.Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Modbus, or Profinet.Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.Preferred QualificationsExperience in food manufacturing or consumer packaged goods (CPG) environment.Familiarity with:Ignition SCADAMES systemsOEE platforms such as QAD RedzoneIndustrial data collection systemsExperience with robotics, servo systems, and motion controls.Understanding of FDA, GMP, HACCP, and food safety standards.Project management experience is a plus.Physical RequirementsAbility to stand, walk, bend, and climb for extended periods.Ability to work in manufacturing environments including exposure to noise, dust, heat, and moving mechanical equipment.Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.Ability to work flexible hours, weekends, or overtime as needed.Work EnvironmentThis position operates primarily in a manufacturing environment and may require interaction with production equipment during operation, troubleshooting, testing, and system implementation activities.Key CompetenciesProblem SolvingAttention to DetailCommunication SkillsTeam CollaborationTechnical AptitudeTime ManagementContinuous Improvement MindsetSafety AwarenessDisclaimerThis job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this position.
