This role is ideal for someone who can actively contribute to technical design and implementation while managing a small-to-mid-sized team.The team is focused on transforming legacy mainframe workloads into modern, cloud-native systems, leveraging tools such as AWS Transform and Rocket Software.What this role will own:Lead and actively contribute to the modernization of mainframe applicationsDrive architecture, design decisions, and implementation for migrating legacy systems to AWSWork closely with engineers on code reviews, design reviews, and debugging complex issuesBreak down monolithic systems into microservices / modular architecturesEvaluate and integrate tooling for automated transformation and migrationPartner with product and platform teams to align on roadmap and executionTechnical expectations:Required:Strong hands-on experience with AWS (designing, building, and operating systems)Proficiency in Java (or similar modern language), Spring Boot, Node, React, PostgreSQL, Kafka, TypeScript, GraphQL, Git, CI/CD, AWS, Docker, and KubernetesRecent coding experienceExperience building distributed systems, APIs, and microservicesComfortable getting into the codebase when needed — this is not a purely managerial roleNice to have:Exposure to mainframe technologies (COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS) or legacy systemsExperience with modernization/migration tools (e.g., AWS Transform, Rocket Software)Background in large-scale system refactoring or re-architectureLeadership profile:Experience managing engineers while remaining technically credible and involvedLeads by example — willing to roll up sleeves and unblock the team directlyStrong problem-solving mindset in ambiguous, evolving environmentsAble to balance execution speed with long-term architecture qualityWhat success looks like:Meaningful progress in migrating legacy workloads to AWSHigh-quality technical decisions that reduce long-term complexityA team that is both productive and technically growing under this leaderWhy Work at UniGroupAt UniGroup, we build technology that supports iconic brands like United Van Lines and Mayflower Transit, while investing in the people who power our platforms.
