Instructor promotes, models, educates, and leads the Lower School in physical education activities, instructs on rules and strategies of individual and team sports, and teaches students about physical fitness. Included as part of the responsibilities of the Instructor is the promotion of respect for self and others, fair play, taking turns, team building and sportsmanship in a structured, yet engaging environment. This position involves working daily with two additional Lower School P.E. instructors with whom they will co-teach and collaborate.Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Lower School Physical Education Instructor will be responsible for the following:Teach, collaborate and plan, along with 2 additional P.E. instructors, physical education lessons for our Lower School studentsMeet and collaborate with other Specials teachers and the PYP Coordinator to develop age appropriate and engaging lessons which connect to our units of inquiry of our PYP programResponsible for designing or co-designing and delivering instruction to our Junior Kindergarten through grade 5 classes in a variety of settingsPromote, model and expect safety in all aspects of the Physical Education curriculum and all interactionsTeach outdoors, in our pools, in our gymnasium and in other areas in support of the P.E. curriculumFoster sportsmanship, respect and fair playPromote physical fitness and healthy lifestyle through additional means to support the P.E. curriculum and the school's mission through programs such as Jump Rope for Heart, Play360, etcModel respect, responsibility, acceptance, open-mindedness in daily interactions with students, teachers and parentsCommunicate clearly with parents, students and faculty issues, ideas and other necessary information to facilitate instruction, school mission and safetyEvaluates each student's growth in physical skills, knowledge, contribution in sports participation, and social skillsContributes to the school community in additional capacities, ex: coaching sports, enrichment programs, and participating in school functions, etc.Perform morning and/or afternoon student supervision duties as assigned by the Head of the Lower School or designee.Ability to supervise up to 30 students ages 4 to 12 independently and work in large groups with other P.E. instructors.Calmly manage students in small and large group settingsAbility and willingness to coach competitive high school athletics strongly preferredOther duties as assigned by the Head of Lower School or PE ChairQualificationsBachelor's or Master's degree in Physical Education (preferred) or related field such as Education with a Certification to teach Physical Education3+ years experience teaching Physical Education in an elementary education is preferredAbility to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and parents/guardiansAbility to coach and contribute directly to a varsity sport at Saint Andrew's is strongly preferredPossess an understanding of technology to facilitate teaching, grades, and communicationPossess the ability to teach a wide range of children ages 4 through 12Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive work environment.Possess collegiality and a willingness to collaborate with colleaguesCommitment to a growth mindset and continuous professional developmentWork outdoors in South Florida weather conditionsAbility to swim, jog, kick, jump, swing sports equipment (i.e., tennis racket, lacrosse stick, etc), throw a ball and other sports related physical activities necessary to support the Physical Education curriculum and instructionCPR/AED and First Aid certification required, training will be provided by Saint Andrew's SchoolLifeguard certification required or willingness to obtain certification prior to start datePhysical Demands: Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, and for the majority of the work day.
