Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.\n\nReceives work orders or project assignment from supervisor.\nAssembles and prepares necessary materials to complete assignment.\nEstablishes safe work area and coordinates activities with the general public as necessary.\nInstalls, maintains and repairs plumbing fixtures and equipment in City facilities.\nThreads piping, bends piping by hand or machine, and connects pipe joints by means of welding, brazing, soldering, gluing, caulking, or threading, depending on how the pipes are to be used.\nPerforms a variety of building maintenance duties as assigned, including demolition and/or construction of permanent or temporary interior walls, plaster patchwork, roof maintenance and repair and installation of floor coverings.\nCompletes and submits routine reports and other paperwork in a timely manner.\nPerforms other duties as assigned or required.\n\nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS\n\nEducation and Experience:\n\nHigh School diploma or GED equivalent; AND five (5) years of related experience or completion of a related apprenticeship program; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.\n\nRequired Licenses or Certifications:\n\nMust possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License.\n\nRequired Knowledge of:\n\nCity organization, operations, policies and procedures.\nBuilding and uniform plumbing codes.\nCommon hand and power tools.\nBasic preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.\nOccupational hazards and safety precautions.\nApplicable regulations and procedures for the disposal of hazardous chemicals.\n\nRequired Skill in:\n\nWelding, soldering, applied mathematics, physics, and chemistry applicable to the plumbing trade.\nSafely using, maintaining and repairing specialized equipment to complete assigned projects.\nFollowing oral and written instructions.\nUtilizing public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints.\nUsing hand and power tools.\nFollowing safety practices and recognizing hazards.\nVerbal and written communications.\nEstablishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.\n\nPhysical Demands / Work Environment:\n\nWork is performed primarily outdoors with considerable time spent in moderate to high temperatures (above 90 degrees).\nWork will require bending, stretching, twisting, digging, climbing and driving; lifting (up to 75 lbs.); kneeling, squatting, and stooping, often in cramped quarters; climbing ladders and working on scaffolding.\nWork will require body coordination, manual dexterity, near vision and moderate color perception.\nWork will consist of exposure to wet surfaces, pronounced vibration and dust, hazardous chemicals and infectious disease.\n\nInternal applicants must use their personal email to apply, as City of Compton work emails will not be accepted for job applications. Phase two (2) is an oral examination (weighted 50%) that will be administered by an appraisal panel to evaluate professional qualifications, background and suitability. The examination process may include graded simulation exercises, writing exercises, and/or oral presentations. A passing score for each phase is 70%. Each candidate will be notified via mail or e-mail.\n\nThe City of Compton reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods, if deemed necessary. All City employees that attain a score of 70.00 on EACH PHASE of the examination but an overall score of less than 75.00 will be placed on the open-competitive eligible list only.\n\nEach eligible list shall remain in effect one (1) year from the date of its establishment unless it is extended, abolished or exhausted. Whenever possible, three (3) names are certified to fill anyone (1) vacant position. No candidate may be certified more than three (3) times for any one classified position. When certifying eligible lists to appointing powers, the promotional eligible list takes precedence over the open-competitive eligible list. A department manager's recommendation for employment is subject to the City Manager's approval.\n\nEXAMINATION APPEAL PROCEDURE\nA candidate may, within five (5) days after taking the written examination, file in writing with the City Manager an appeal against any part of the test, citing the item or items against which the appeal is directed, and the reason(s) for such appeal.
