About the RoleTorc is developing Level 4 autonomous truck technology to transform how freight moves across the world. As a Senior Systems Test Engineer – Vehicle Testing, you will play a critical role in validating the safety and performance of our autonomous driving system at the vehicle level.You will define and execute test strategies that support safety case development, ensuring our system meets both functional safety (ISO 26262) and behavioral safety (SOTIF) requirements. Your work will directly influence how we validate autonomy across real-world driving conditions, from closed-course testing to on-road deployments.This role is highly cross-functional, partnering with systems engineering, perception, planning, and safety teams to ensure robust system integration and safe operation across diverse environments.What You’ll DoDefine and own vehicle-level test strategy aligned to safety goals and system requirementsDevelop and maintain detailed test cases and specifications for autonomous driving functionsDerive test coverage from requirements, HARA/FMEA outputs, ASIL levels, and SOTIF analysesDesign and execute structured test scenarios across perception, planning, and control systemsLead closed-course and on-road vehicle testing across a variety of ODD conditionsDevelop and implement post-processing scripts (Python/MATLAB) to assess pass/fail criteria and automate analysisInvestigate, triage, and document system-level defects and anomalies identified during testingDrive cross-functional collaboration to propose and implement corrective actionsOwn contributions to safety case closure, including traceability, test evidence, and defect reportingProduce clear and comprehensive technical reports, dashboards, and presentations for internal and regulatory audiencesEnsure all testing activities align with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and company protocolsWhat You’ll Need to SucceedBachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Robotics, Automotive Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred)5+ years of experience in autonomous vehicles, ADAS, robotics, or safety-critical system testingStrong experience developing test cases from:System requirementsSafety goals and ASIL classificationsScenario-based safety analyses (ODDs, edge cases, SOTIF scenarios)Practical knowledge of:ISO 26262 (Functional Safety)ISO 21448 (SOTIF)Experience with vehicle-level testing and real-world validation environmentsStrong understanding of perception systems, sensor fusion, and ML validation challengesExperience with:CAN and Ethernet-based automotive systemsData logging and vehicle debugging toolsROS/ROS2 or similar robotics middlewareStrong scripting skills (Python and/or MATLAB) for data analysis and post-processingProven ability to investigate system behavior, identify root causes, and translate findings into actionable insightsStrong communication skills and ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teamsBonus Points:Experience testing autonomous vehicles or ADAS systems in production environmentsExperience working with simulation, HiL, or large-scale validation frameworksFamiliarity with perception model failure modes and data-driven validation approachesExperience supporting safety case development or regulatory submissionsWork Location: For this position, we are open to hiring in either the Ann Arbor, MI OR Blacksburg, VA (U.S.) office work locations in a hybrid capacity.
