As AI accelerates demand for scalable infrastructure, cloud costs are soaring, and most teams still rely on spreadsheets to manage them.\n\nAt North, we’re building the next-generation cloud, AI, and data spend management platform. We give companies real-time visibility, control, and automation over their digital asset finances so they can grow efficiently without wasting time or money.\n\nBacked by top-tier investors and trusted by companies managing complex cloud environments, North is building the financial operating system for the public cloud.\n\nAbout the Role\nBe Our First Internal Tools Engineer\n\nYou'll be North's first dedicated Internal Tools Engineer, joining our Engineering team to build this function from the ground up. This is an opportunity to establish the technical foundation, architecture, and best practices for how we develop internal tools, integrations, and automations across the company.\n\nYou'll have significant ownership over identifying opportunities, setting technical standards, and building scalable solutions that can be reused as North grows. Rather than inheriting an established roadmap or legacy systems, you'll help define what internal tooling looks like at North and shape how we approach automation across the organization.\n\nWhile this is a hands-on individual contributor role, your work will lay the groundwork for a future Internal Tools team. As the company scales, the systems, processes, and engineering practices you establish will serve as the foundation for expanding the function.\n\nWe’re looking for an Internal Tools Engineer to join our Engineering team and build the systems, automations, and tools that make North operate faster and more effectively.\n\nYou’ll work across all of North to identify manual, repetitive, or inefficient workflows and turn them into reliable software. That could mean building an internal application from scratch, integrating systems through APIs, automating a multi-step operational workflow, or using AI to eliminate work that previously required significant manual effort.\n\nYou won’t just receive a list of tickets. We want someone who can understand a problem, determine whether and how it should be automated, propose a technical approach, and own the solution through production.\n\nWe care about building internal systems with the same engineering discipline we apply to our customer-facing product. The goal isn’t to create a collection of one-off scripts—it’s to build reliable, maintainable, reusable tooling that can scale with the company.\n\nYou’ll sit within Engineering while partnering closely with teams across North, giving you visibility into how the entire business operates and the opportunity to improve it through software.\n\nWhat You’ll Do\nBuild internal tools from end to end. Design, develop, deploy, and maintain applications and services that help North’s teams operate more efficiently.\nAutomate manual workflows. Identify repetitive or time-consuming processes across the company and replace them with reliable software and automation.\nBuild AI-enabled workflows. Use LLMs, APIs, agents, and other AI technologies where they can meaningfully reduce manual work or improve decision-making.\nConnect our systems. Build integrations between the platforms North uses across engineering and the broader organization, creating reliable data and workflow connections between them.\nBuild Python services and APIs. Develop maintainable backend services that power internal applications, integrations, and automations.\nCreate internal interfaces. Build lightweight dashboards, applications, and interfaces that make internal systems intuitive for non-engineering users.\nDesign reusable systems. Build service layers, libraries, abstractions, and integrations that can support multiple workflows instead of solving the same problem repeatedly.\nOwn architecture decisions. Determine the right technical approach for new tools and automations, including when to build, integrate, automate, or keep a process manual.\nOwn tools in production. Monitor, debug, maintain, and improve the systems you build as workflows and business requirements evolve.\nBuild for reliability. Implement strong testing, observability, error handling, permissions, and guardrails so internal automations can be trusted.\nWork directly with internal users. Understand how teams actually work, translate their problems into technical requirements, and iterate based on feedback.\nExperiment quickly. Prototype new approaches—including AI-powered solutions—while knowing when an experiment needs to become production-quality software.\nWhat We’re Looking For\n3–7 years of software engineering experience building and shipping production systems\nStrong Python experience and the ability to write clean, maintainable, idiomatic code\nExperience building backend services, APIs, integrations, or internal applications\nStrong understanding of REST APIs, webhooks, authentication, and working with third-party platforms\nExperience automating workflows or building tools that meaningfully reduced manual work\nAbility to take an ambiguous operational problem and independently turn it into a technical solution\nExperience designing and operating production systems rather than only building prototypes\nAbility to write reusable code and abstractions instead of relying on one-off scripts\nStrong fundamentals around Git workflows, code review, testing, and collaborative software development\nStrong critical thinking skills—you reason from first principles, evaluate tradeoffs, and can explain why you chose a particular approach\nPragmatic use of AI and LLM coding tools: you use them to move faster while still understanding the code, architecture, and tradeoffs behind what you ship\nStrong testing discipline and an understanding that internal tooling still requires reliability, security, and maintainability\nStrong communication skills and the ability to work directly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders\nComfort operating independently in a fast-moving environment where priorities can change quickly\nA builder mentality—you naturally notice inefficient processes and start thinking about how software could make them better\nNice to Have\nExperience building AI-powered internal tools, agents, or LLM-based workflows\nExperience with LLM APIs, prompt engineering, tool calling, RAG, or agentic systems\nExperience with workflow automation platforms such as n8n, Zapier, or similar tools\nExperience building internal admin panels, dashboards, or lightweight frontend applications\nJavaScript or TypeScript experience\nExperience integrating SaaS platforms across functions such as engineering, sales, recruiting, finance, or operations\nExperience with AWS and cloud infrastructure\nInfrastructure-as-code experience with tools such as Terraform\nExperience with databases, data pipelines, or event-driven architectures\nExperience in a startup or similarly fast-moving environment\nExperience owning an internal platform or tool from initial problem discovery through ongoing production support\nOutstanding recognition in competitions, technical projects, open-source work, or business ventures\nWork Setup\n\nWe offer both hybrid work models based out of our Dumbo Brooklyn office, as well as remote US, with opportunities to travel to the office for team onsites.\n\nBenefits\nUnlimited PTO\n16 weeks of paid parental leave (birthing parents receive an additional 4 weeks at 50% pay)\nTwo company-wide breaks per year: one around Labor Day and one at the end of the year\nAetna Medical PPO plan with the majority of the premium covered by North\nDental and vision insurance\nFlexible spending account (FSA) for health expenses and commuter benefits\n30-day sabbatical every 4 years\nCompensation\n\n$150,000 – $200,000 base salary, depending on experience + equity\n\nThe pay range for this role is:\n150,000 - 200,000 USD per year(USA)","company":"Northcloud","rawCompany":"northcloud","city":"Brooklyn","state":"NY","isRemote":false,"isActive":false,"createdAt":"2026-10-16T09:21:30.537Z","occupations":[{"code":"15-1252.00","title":"Software Developers","slug":"software-developers"},{"code":"15-1299.08","title":"Computer Systems Engineers/Architects","slug":"computer-systems-engineers-architects"},{"code":"15-1211.00","title":"Computer Systems Analysts","slug":"computer-systems-analysts"}],"industries":[{"code":"513210","title":"Software Publishers","slug":"software-publishers"},{"code":"541511","title":"Custom Computer Programming Services","slug":"custom-computer-programming-services"},{"code":"541512","title":"Computer Systems Design Services","slug":"computer-systems-design-services"}],"jobPosting":{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"JobPosting","title":"Software Engineer, Internal Tools","description":"About North Cloud\n\nThe public cloud is rapidly evolving, with businesses investing over $200 billion annually in cloud technology.
