The Energy Systems Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory develops technology solutions that enhance the resilience and efficiency of both civilian and defense energy systems. This includes developing advanced architectures and system designs to improve the resilience of power grids, developing new control techniques for microgrids and distributed energy resources, and developing hardware and real-time simulation testbeds.Position DescriptionSummer Intern – Tactical Microgrid Research and DevelopmentThe Energy Systems Group seeks a summer intern to join a multidisciplinary team that researches and develops advanced microgrid control systems for land, sea, air, and space applications. This team developed the Tactical Microgrid Standard (MIL-STD-3071) and uses it as the foundation for much of its ongoing work. System designs encompass component behaviors, key interfaces, and distributed communications and control.Key ResponsibilitiesThe candidate will contribute to the team’s research and development efforts in areas such as:Power system identification and modelingEnergy infrastructure information managementPower signal processingMicrogrid control architectureEnergy system cybersecurityUse case developmentActivities may include analysis, simulation, software development, hardware integration, and presentation of results.QualificationsCandidates who are in the process of earning a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, or another engineering discipline will be considered.Desired Technical ExperienceExperience or exposure in a subset of the following areas is desired:Power systems concepts: Equipment dynamics, power flow, and energy system modelingSimulation and analysis tools: Application-specific platforms for modeling and performance evaluationEmerging technologies: Electric vehicle and renewable energy integration challengesResearch and development: Interest in microgrid design, control systems, and applied energy technologiesSummer Research Program OverviewThe Summer Research Program offers students the chance to apply their academic knowledge to real-world national security challenges while working alongside leading scientists and engineers.
