This role owns planning, execution, and delivery across R&D, Quality, Regulatory, and Operations, ensuring programs stay aligned, risks are surfaced early, and teams remain focused on critical milestones. You will act as the connective tissue between engineering, quality, regulatory, clinical, and external partners — driving clarity, accountability, and execution in a fast‑moving environment.\n\nThe Staff Technical Program Engineer will report to the Senior Director, Hardware Development and will not have direct reports.\n\nLocation: Onsite Hybrid (San Mateo, CA)\n\nThe compensation range for this role is market driven, with a salary range of $150,000 - $180,000. Additionally, we offer a robust benefits package. This offering is aligned with our overall compensation philosophy.\n\nApplicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis. Cala will not sponsor applicants for work visas.\n\nSpecific Responsibilities\n\nLead cross‑functional medical device development programs spanning product design, quality, regulatory, testing, and clinical activities\n\nBuild and maintain integrated program plans, schedules, and deliverables from concept through commercialization\n\nDrive execution by tracking milestones, managing dependencies, and resolving blockers\n\nFacilitate core team meetings, design reviews, and executive updates\n\nIdentify critical paths and proactively manage risks\n\nSupport design controls, design reviews, and documentation for regulated medical devices\n\nPartner with Quality and Regulatory to support verification, validation, and regulatory submissions\n\nManage communication with key vendors and external partners\n\nChampion structured program management practices while keeping teams focused on outcomes\n\nDesired Skills and Experience\n\nBS in Engineering, Science, or related technical field\n\n5+ years of program or project management experience in medical devices or regulated product development\n\nStrong working knowledge of medical device design controls and phase‑gate development processes\n\nComfortable operating across R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, and external vendors\n\nStrong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple complex programs simultaneously\n\nExcellent written and verbal communication skills\n\nExperience using project management tools and documentation systems (PDM/QMS)\n\nNice to have\n\nFamiliarity with standards such as IEC 60601‑1 and ISO 10993\n\nExperience supporting clinical studies\n\nBackground in statistical analysis or data‑driven program tracking\n\nCala Health believes our success is based on diversity of people, teams and thinking.
