Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Position Summary
Thompson Engineering is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with 10+ years of experience and an active Professional Engineer (PE) license to lead and grow our geotechnical engineering services. This role is ideal for a highly experienced engineer who combines strong technical expertise with project management, client leadership, and mentoring capabilities.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering complex geotechnical investigations, analyses, and designs while supporting business development and guiding junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage geotechnical engineering projects from proposal through completion
Plan and oversee subsurface investigations, including field exploration and laboratory testing programs
Perform and review geotechnical analyses and design for:
Foundations (shallow and deep)
Earth retaining structures
Slopes and embankments
Pavements and earthwork
Prepare, review, and seal geotechnical engineering reports and recommendations
Provide technical oversight and quality control for geotechnical deliverables
Serve as a technical advisor to clients, project managers, and design teams
Support business development efforts, including proposal preparation and client meetings
Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical staff
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including structural, civil, and construction services
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering (Master's preferred)
Professional Engineer (PE) license (required)
10+ years of geotechnical engineering experience
Strong knowledge of geotechnical principles, design methods, and industry standards
Experience managing multiple projects and budgets simultaneously
Proven ability to produce high-quality technical reports and recommendations
Excellent communication, leadership, and client-facing skills
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering
Experience working on transportation, commercial, industrial, or infrastructure projects
Familiarity with regional soil conditions and local/state regulatory requirements
Experience supporting or leading business development initiatives
