Protection and Control Field Manager

We’re looking for a Protection and Control Field Manager to lead and support field operations for substation protection and control projects across high-voltage utility environments. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with operational leadership responsibilities, overseeing relay testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, team management, customer relationships, and overall department performance to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.What You’ll DoLead field execution for protection and control (P&C) testing, commissioning, and maintenance projects across utility substationsSupervise, mentor, and coordinate field technicians while supporting hiring, team growth, and overall crew performanceManage field operations, schedules, manpower, equipment, and customer deliverables to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and on scheduleServe as the primary field contact for customers, project managers, and operations teams while maintaining strong client relationships and supporting business growth opportunitiesSupport department operations through forecasting, productivity tracking, operational improvements, and overall field performance managementOversee testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and commissioning of protective relays, SCADA systems, pilot channel equipment, fiber optics, and related substation systemsReview relay settings, wiring diagrams, test procedures, and commissioning documentation to ensure accuracy, compliance, and quality standardsLead outage planning, system integration, emergency response, and troubleshooting activities during commissioning and maintenance effortsPromote and enforce a strong safety culture while ensuring compliance with company policies, client procedures, and PPE requirementsExperience We’re Looking For10+ years of experience in substation commissioning, relay testing, and P&C troubleshooting within utility or high-voltage environments3 years’ experience leading field crews, supervising technicians, or managing field operationsExperience managing customer relationships and supporting business growth initiativesStrong understanding of departmental operations, staffing, productivity, and financial performance metricsStrong knowledge of protective relays, three-phase protection schemes, SCADA systems, substation automation, and integration testingExperience with project leadership, outage coordination, and customer-facing communicationAbility to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical documentationStrong troubleshooting, leadership, and decision-making skills in live substation environmentsProficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and OutlookAdditional RequirementsHigh school diploma or GED requiredMust successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug testsValid driver’s licenseMust be willing and able to travel frequently (up to 50%), including overnight staysMust complete annual safety training; some training may require travel outside your regionRequires good vision, hearing, and English proficiency for safe, effective communication in noisy environmentsBonus Points ForBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field highly preferred (or equivalent industry experience)NETA certification (any level) or familiarity with NETA standardsWhy Join RMS EnergyWe’re not just another power services company.
