Lead Barista

We are a cafe/bakery/shop in the center of Groton looking for a Lead Barista / Shift Lead dedicated to the art of coffee, customer service, and leadership. As a hybrid shop of scratch kitchen, fair trade coffee/tea, and ethical retail, it makes it easy to stand behind what we provide for our community and those passing through. The Lead Barista / Shift Lead is responsible for day-to-day store operations, maintaining high store standards and conditions, and fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for customers and team members under the supervision of cafe management. A Barista Shift Lead represents the tone of the Salt & Light brand by being a role-model in all aspects of work including: customer service, product knowledge, education, safe work practices, and teamwork. They are responsible for ensuring that the cafe meets all health code and building standards as set by cafe management. They are also responsible for communicating with the leads of all departments to ensure a cohesive environment/production. This position does include tips in addition to the base rate (bringing the hourly rate to $22+/hr). Complimentary food and beverage during your shift and employee discounts. Saturdays are required. Job Responsibilities & Tasks Customer Service The Lead Barista is considered an "expert barista," so providing customer service is an essential part of the job. Lead Baristas are expected to provide beverages and food to customers, but are also there to address customers' issues when they arise, contacting managers as needed. During times of high volume or unusual events, Lead Baristas are expected to be calm and in charge, delegating tasks effectively to the rest of staff. Supervising The Lead Barista runs cafe operations during their scheduled shifts. This includes opening and closing the cafe, supervising employees, delegating tasks and responsibilities, mentoring/training baristas as needed and developing positive relationships with the staff and customers. The Lead Barista should ensure proper cash management and cash register policies. The Lead Barista is responsible for quality control of all beverages for both Cafe and Catering; ensuring every customer / client is getting consistent, high-quality beverages. Knowledge/Abilities Lead Baristas are to have the ability to supervise the work of others, learn quickly, and communicate effectively and efficiently with the Operations Manager. Lead Baristas are to keep track of inventory, and notify management when something is low, and needs to be re-ordered. The Lead Barista is responsible for tracking coffee consumption and placing coffee orders. Continuing a friendly and strong relationship with our roasters with on time ordering and any training that is needed. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are important in dealing with managers, customers, staff, and vendors. The Lead Barista is to have the ability to remain calm and professional in difficult situations and delegate tasks to team members on shift in order to get all work done in a correct and timely manner. The Lead Barista will be expected to contribute to menu item creation, seasonal and general new drink development. All other duties as assigned by Cafe Manager or leadership team member. Requirements The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following professional qualifications: Maintain a strong passion for community and teamwork High School Diploma or equivalent 1+ year of specialty coffee experience (required) Must know about specialty coffee and produce proper latte art 1+ year of specialty coffee leadership (preferred) Register and cash handling experience Well-organized, detail-oriented and ability to multitask Effective problem solving/decision making abilities Excellent verbal and written communication skills Job Type: Full-time Pay: $17.00 - $24.00 per hour Shift: 8 hour shift Day shift Morning shift Work Location: In person
