This role involves the development, analysis, optimization, and implementation of refinery processes and systems. As a member of the Process Engineering Team, the PDE supports the Capital Projects group in developing and guiding process and project design. Additionally, this role will support unit troubleshooting, identifying and implementing process improvements, supporting site safety and environmental groups, and may assume additional process engineering responsibilities as needed. This position is based at Chalmette Refining in Chalmette, Louisiana.\n\nKey Responsibilities\nProject Development\n\nSupport the Project Team with project engineering requirements, including process design input, technical reviews, scope definition, and alignment with engineering standards and best practices.\n\nIdentify and evaluate capital and optimization projects aligned with safety, environmental, and economic goals and standards.\n\nCollaborate with business team, technical, and project teams resources to advance initiatives.\n\nProcess Design, Engineering & Optimization\n\nPerform equipment sizing and specification (pumps, heat exchangers, columns, reactors, piping, etc.).\n\nEvaluate existing processes for performance improvements, yield enhancement, energy efficiency, and cost reduction.\n\nResearch and assess technologies to improve unit operations and develop site‑specific implementation plans.\n\nSupport Front‑End Engineering Design (FEED) and detailed engineering phases.\n\nDevelop and optimize process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and heat and material balances.\n\nStandards Compliance & Process Safety\n\nLead multidisciplinary reviews of project designs addressing process design, safety, environmental compliance, reliability, operability, constructability, and cost estimation.\n\nEnsure project development complies with PBF's capital project best practices, industry design standards, and site‑specific requirements.\n\nParticipate in PHAs, HAZOPs, and safety reviews.\n\nPerform Safety Relief Reviews (SRRs) and maintain the PSPPM database.\n\nEnsure process designs comply with regulatory and environmental standards.\n\nExecution Support & Field Coordination\n\nInterface with construction and project execution teams during construction, commissioning, and startup of new and refurbished facilities.\n\nProvide field verification and troubleshooting support to ensure accurate implementation of process designs.\n\nSupport the area process engineers during unit turnarounds, including confined space entry and inspections as needed.\n\nCollaboration, Mentoring & Knowledge Sharing\n\nCollaborate with operations, maintenance, reliability, safety, and environmental teams to ensure effective and compliant process designs.\n\nMentor process engineers in areas of expertise.\n\nCollaborate with the revision and update of PBF's engineering practices and document lessons learned.\n\nActive participation in the site's Loss Prevention System (LPS) and use of its tools.\n\nSupport and participate in best practice networks as needed.\n\nCollaborates with the Process Engineering Leads as needed to support technical tasks requiring an experienced process engineer or expertise beyond the scope of the area Process Engineers.\n\nDigital Tools & Communication\n\nUtilize digital tools (e.g., PI System, Seeq) for process monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization.\n\nSupport and contribute to process modeling efforts, collaborating with the process engineering team to optimize and troubleshoot refinery operations.\n\nPrepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations to communicate project progress and recommendations.\n\nUtilize Aspen HYSYS (and other applicable simulation tools) to develop, tune, and maintain rigorous process models that enable unit optimization, troubleshooting, constraint identification, debottlenecking, evaluation of operational changes and capital projects, including support for design basis development and engineering studies.\n\nJob Qualifications\n\nBachelor's degree in chemical or mechanical engineering is required.\n\nMaster's degree in an engineering field is preferred.\n\nMinimum of 6–10 years of experience in refining, petrochemical or engineering firms is required.\n\nProject experience in a refinery and/or chemical plant environment is required.\n\nStrong knowledge of API, ASME, and other applicable design standards.\n\nExperience with Siemens PSPPM software is desirable.\n\nProficiency in process simulation tools (e.g., Aspen HYSYS, PRO/II).\n\nFamiliarity with process safety methodologies and Safety Relief Review using the software Siemens-‐ PSPPM.\n\nExperience with P&ID/PFD development, equipment sizing, and capital project execution.\n\nDemonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary reviews and mentor junior engineers.\n\nStrong communication skills and ability to convey technical content to cross‑functional teams.\n\nWillingness to support field activities, turnarounds, and confined space entries.\n\nEqual Opportunity Employment\nPBF Energy is an equal opportunity employer.
