The Controller oversees budgeting and forecasting, maintains internal controls, and develops the accounting team. The role focuses on continual process improvement, strengthening financial visibility, and supporting operational and leadership decision-making. The Controller acts as both a hands-on leader and a strategic partner.\r\nKey Accountabilities & Responsibilities\r\nFinancial Reporting & Month-End Close\r\nManage and oversee the month-end close process\r\nReview journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations\r\nEnsure balance sheet accounts are reconciled monthly\r\nPrepare and review monthly financial statements\r\nPerform variance analysis and explain results to leadership\r\nMaintain the general ledger and chart of accounts\r\nCoordinate year-end audit and tax support\r\nEnsure financial records are audit-ready\r\nContinuously improve the close process and reduce close timeline\r\nBilling, Accounts Receivable, and Accounts Payable Management\r\nOversee customer billing and invoicing processes\r\nMonitor and manage AR aging and collections\r\nWork with operations and sales to resolve billing disputes\r\nOversee carrier payables and vendor payables\r\nEnsure timely processing of carrier invoices and overhead vendor invoices\r\nMonitor unbilled revenue and accrued expenses\r\nTrack and report DSO and payment cycles\r\nImprove billing, collections, and payment workflows\r\nImplement processes that improve cash flow and working capital\r\nBudgeting & Forecasting\r\nCoordinate and manage the annual budget process\r\nWork with department leaders to develop department budgets\r\nConsolidate budget assumptions and prepare budget models\r\nPrepare monthly budget vs. actual reporting\r\nUpdate forecasts periodically throughout the year, as requested\r\nAnalyze and explain budget variances\r\nSupport leadership with financial modeling and planning\r\nImprove budgeting and forecasting processes over time\r\nInternal Controls & Accounting Processes\r\nMaintain accounting and other financial policies and procedures\r\nEnsure internal controls over cash, billing, and payments are effective\r\nDocument accounting workflows and processes\r\nIdentify risk areas and implement process improvements\r\nEnsure compliance with accounting standards and company policies\r\nCoordinate audit requests and financial audits\r\nImprove accounting workflows and reduce manual processes\r\nPayroll Processing & Compliance\r\nOversee payroll processing to ensure employees are paid accurately and on time\r\nReview payroll for accuracy, including commissions, bonuses, and variable compensation\r\nEnsure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations\r\nOversee payroll tax filings and related reporting\r\nEnsure proper recording of payroll in the general ledger\r\nManage payroll-related accruals (bonuses, commissions, PTO, etc.)\r\nCoordinate with HR on employee data, compensation changes, and benefits deductions\r\nMaintain payroll controls and confidentiality of employee information\r\nImprove payroll processes and ensure scalability as the company grows\r\nAccounting Team Leadership & Culture\r\nManage and supervise accounting staff\r\nEstablish clear roles, responsibilities, and expectations\r\nReview work for accuracy and completeness\r\nEnsure deadlines are met across the accounting function\r\nTrain, mentor, and develop team members\r\nFoster open communication and collaboration within the team\r\nCreate a culture of accountability, trust, and continuous improvement\r\nDevelop team members to take on increasing responsibility over time\r\nEnsure the accounting team operates as a reliable and responsive partner to the organization\r\nSystems & Process Improvement\r\nIdentify and implement process improvements\r\nImprove efficiency of accounting and billing workflows\r\nAssist with ERP, accounting system, and integrations\r\nReduce manual processes and improve automation\r\nImprove financial reporting and visibility for leadership\r\nSupport system implementations and upgrades\r\nQualification and Education Requirements\r\nCertified Public Accountant (\"CPA\")\r\nBachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance\r\nMinimum 8–10 years of progressive financial experience, including as Controller, in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment\r\nExperience leading a team\r\nStrong analytical skills, including use of Excel\r\nStrong knowledge and involvement in financial reporting and month-end close\r\nExperience with billing, accounts receivable, and accounts payable processes\r\nWorking knowledge of budgeting and forecasting\r\nStrong organizational, leadership, and communication skills\r\nPreferred Skills\r\nMBA\r\nExperience in surface logistics\r\nExperience with ERP/accounting systems\r\nExperience with reporting tools (PowerBI, Tableau, etc.)\r\nCompensation & Benefits\r\nThe anticipated base salary range for this role is $150,000 - $180,000 per year.
