POSITION TITLE: Literacy SpecialistFLSA: ExemptQUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor Degree RequiredValid Texas Teacher Certificate, preferredRetired Teachers welcomedREPORTS TO: SupervisorTERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Up to 8 hours dailyPOSITION OVERVIEW:A literacy specialist works with children to help them overcome their struggles in reading and reading comprehension, vocabulary and critical thinking.ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:Work one on one or in small groups for the majority of the work day to help students improve their ability to readUse reading exercises to develop the students' ability to understand textExpand students' listening and speaking skills through exercises, games and activitiesDevelop the students' ability to think and write clearly and with purposeDetermine what is working and what you can improve to help students meet their goalsWork with teachers and administrators to make recommendations on the reading curriculumAssess students' needs, strengths and weaknessesMay be required to organize, plan and implement classroom activities and projectsOTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:Exhibit dependability and punctuality in assigned dutiesDisplay appropriate personal and professional traits that exhibit a positive role model for studentsTake all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilitiesEstablish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, directors and teachersUse effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearlyCompile, maintain and file all physical and digital reports, records and other documents requiredRetirement is through the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) of Texas and not Social Security. TRS requires five years of participation before any retirement funds are vested. Texas Workers Compensation covers workers in this position.Some employees are partially or fully funded with federal funds. Staff should ask their campus Director if they are paid from federal funds.
