Job Description Position SummaryThis is not a basic shop mechanic position. It is a hybrid role designed to keep an experienced technician fully utilized across three lanes of work: heavy truck and wrecker maintenance, motorcoach repair support, and roadside service response. The right candidate can diagnose problems independently in the field, make sound repair decisions in the shop, and bounce between scheduled work and unpredictable calls without losing momentum. Late-day shop coverage, weekend coverage, and emergency roadside response availability are core to the role.Key ResponsibilitiesOn the Road• Respond to roadside service calls during scheduled hours and mandatory after-hours coverage.• Operate heavy-duty and light-duty tow equipment safely and professionally.• Diagnose and perform field repairs to return vehicles, trucks, or motorcoaches to service when possible.• Communicate clearly with dispatch, customers, motor clubs, and law enforcement on scene.• Complete accurate call documentation, photos, and paperwork for every job.In the Shop• Perform diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repairs on heavy trucks and road coaches.• Service and repair wrecker systems including hydraulics, PTO systems, winches, wheel-lifts, lighting, and wiring.• Diagnose and repair air brake, electrical, suspension, steering, cooling, charging, starting, and drivability issues.• Support DOT inspection preparation and general fleet readiness.• Maintain the shop, service truck, tools, and equipment in organized, safe working condition.• Complete repair notes and communicate needed parts or follow-up repairs to the Working Manager.• Help train less-experienced team members on safe procedures and best practices.RequirementsRequired Qualifications• Hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic, fleet technician, road technician, or experienced wrecker operator.• Minimum 3 years of diesel engine repair experience.• Valid driver's license and clean driving record.• Ability to pass DOT physical and background screening.• Solid mechanical aptitude across diesel, hydraulic, electrical, and air brake systems.• Willingness to be on-call and respond to after-hours calls on a rotating basis.• Comfortable working independently in the field and making sound repair decisions on scene.Preferred Qualifications• CDL (Class A or Class B).• Wrecker or hydraulic system experience.• Roadside or mobile mechanic experience.• Motorcoach, bus, or medium/heavy-duty commercial vehicle experience.• WreckMaster, TRAA, or other towing and recovery certifications.• ASE certifications (e.g., T-series Medium/Heavy Truck, School Bus).Physical Requirements• Ability to lift, push, and pull equipment associated with shop and roadside recovery work.• Comfort working in shop and outdoor environments in all weather conditions.• Ability to work on-call shifts, including nights and weekends, on a rotating basis.BenefitsCompensation & Benefits• Hourly pay: $38–$45 per hour based on experience, with flexibility above the range for an exceptional candidate.• Overtime available.• Paid from dispatch to return on roadside calls.• Minimum call-out guarantee.• Steady hours combining shop work with roadside coverage — no waiting around between calls.• Paid Time Off (PTO) and parental leave.• 401(k) with company matching.• Health, dental, and vision insurance.• Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA).• Life insurance.• Employee Assistance Program (EAP).• Opportunity to grow with a stable transportation company expanding its towing operation.
