The role focuses on assisting detained juveniles in completing their academic assignments, improving literacy and numeracy skills, preparing for GED testing, and fostering a positive learning environment that supports the youths’ educational and rehabilitative goals. This position collaborates with probation officers, counselors, and other education staff to ensure the academic progress and well-being of youth under the department’s supervision.\nEssential Functions\nAcademic Support & Tutoring:\nProvide individualized or small group tutoring for detained juveniles, helping them complete assigned coursework, prepare for standardized testing (e.g., GED), and improve academic performance in subjects such as reading, writing, mathematics, and science.\nAssess the educational needs of each juvenile and develop tailored lesson plans and activities to support their academic growth.\nProvide instruction and guidance on study strategies, time management, and effective learning techniques.\nCollaboration & Coordination:\nWork closely with educational staff, including teachers and counselors, to track students' academic progress and create personalized educational plans.\nCommunicate regularly with probation officers and other juvenile detention staff to ensure that each juvenile’s educational needs are being met.\nAssist in preparing progress reports on juveniles’ academic performance, behavioral issues, and other factors affecting their education.\nMentorship & Positive Reinforcement:\nServe as a positive role model, encouraging students to take ownership of their learning and personal development.\nProvide emotional support and encouragement to help juveniles stay motivated and engaged in their academic work.\nPromote good behavior and academic integrity through positive reinforcement strategies.\nRecordkeeping & Reporting:\nMaintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, including lesson plans, attendance, and progress reports.\nDocument any significant behavioral or academic issues and report them to appropriate staff.\nEnsure compliance with all educational standards, policies, and regulations.\nProgram Development & Enhancement:\nAssist in developing and implementing educational programs and activities that address the specific needs of detained youth, including special education services where applicable.\nParticipate in regular staff meetings to contribute ideas for improving educational services within the juvenile detention facility.\nCrisis Management & Safety:\nFollow all safety protocols and procedures while providing tutoring services, ensuring a safe learning environment.\nBe prepared to manage challenging behaviors and de-escalate conflicts as needed, working collaboratively with detention staff.\nQualifications\nEducation:\nBachelor’s degree in education, Social Work, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or a related field is preferred.\nAlternative combinations of education and experience that demonstrate the ability to perform the essential duties may be considered.\nExperience:\nPrior experience working with at-risk youth, in juvenile detention, or in an educational setting is preferred.\nExperience tutoring or teaching, particularly in a structured or correctional environment, is a plus.\nSkills & Abilities:\nStrong knowledge of educational practices, teaching techniques, and adolescent development.\nExcellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with diverse youth populations.\nAbility to maintain professional boundaries while working with detained juveniles.\nPatience, empathy, and a non-judgmental attitude when working with challenging youth behaviors.\nAbility to manage group dynamics, resolve conflicts, and provide crisis intervention when necessary.\nCertifications:\nCPR and First Aid certification preferred.\nAny additional training or certifications related to juvenile education, behavioral management, or rehabilitation is a plus.\nWorking Conditions\nPhysical Demands:\nMust be able to sit for extended periods and may require walking, standing, and occasional lifting of materials or supplies.\nEnvironment:\nWork is performed in a secure juvenile detention facility where individuals’ charges can range from minor to serious offenses. There may be occasional exposure to challenging or disruptive behaviors.\nIncluding but not limited to:\nLanguage not conducive to a work environment: including foul language and curse words\nHostile Behavior and disruptive behavior\nHigh Stress\nCultural and Racial Tensions\nExposure to Conflict and Violence:\nYou may be exposed to an environment where aggression and violence between residents are present. Tensions can run high, particularly if individuals are struggling. You may witness verbal or physical altercations.\nSurveillance and Supervision:\nThe presence of probation officers, staff, and security personnel is maintained at all times.
