The immediate supervisor for this position is the City Clerk. The person in this position is supervised on a less than weekly basis, and works regular hours' year round. There is rarely overtime associated with this position, and almost never works nights except for emergency situations. There is no shift work associated with this position. The person in this position is almost never on call. 5% of the work is done indoors; 95% of the work is done outdoors and requires work done in all types of weather conditions. The Meter Reader is accountable for the fiscal, safety, and legal issues for which this position is responsible.\n\nThere is exposure to chemicals and/or hazardous materials on a daily basis. This exposure includes, but is not limited to, wasps, pest repellent, pepper spray, exhaust fumes, business waste, and pesticides. The stress level associated with this position varies from moderately low to moderately high depending on the situation or workload. Physical work involved with this position includes, but not limited to, walking, being on feet always, shoveling, stooping, running, carrying, lifting.\n\nLICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:\n\nThe candidate in this position must have a valid Commercial Driver License.\nEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:\n\nThe candidate in this position must have a high school diploma.\nAt least 1 year of experience in understanding and working with meters is strongly recommended 2 years is preferred.\nKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:\nKnowledge\n\nExcellent attention to detail\nMeter installation and testing\nProcedures for handling and shipping hazardous materials safely\nProcedures for testing electrical circuits and fixtures\nProcedures to maintain equipment\nProper use of specialized equipment and hand tools\nProcedures to maintain vehicles and equipment\nLayout of City streets\nFederal, State and City codes related to electrical systems\nElectrical system layouts\nCity personnel policies\nLife safety\nGeneral office and filing practices and procedures\nBasic carpentry work\nMaintenance and repair of all types of equipment\nSafety measures needed for using herbicides\nProper grammar and the use of English in speaking and writing\nComputer operations and applications, including word processing and spreadsheets\nOSHA standards and regulations concerning employee safety\nFederal and state statues concerning the work of the department\nMathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication\nGeneral functions and operations of municipal government\nSkills and Abilities:\n\nExtensive walking\nWork as a team member with other employees\nCommunicate effectively with other city employees, both oral and written\nAchieve and maintain proper certification\nDetermine appropriate meters for specific service needs\nComplete detailed, technical work accurately\nDistinguish colors\nGood driving skills\nTime organization and planning\nManage many activities at one time\nAllocate resources for efficient work completion\nPrioritize equipment and material needs on a daily basis\nComplete required reports on a timely basis\nApply appropriate solutions to problems\nOperate equipment properly\nMaintain equipment and vehicles\nExamine equipment and determine what is causing a problem\nComplete all required paperwork\nPrioritize daily work flow\nWork as a team member with other employees\nCommunicate effectively with other city employees, both oral and written\nWork autonomously when necessary\nHandle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions\nDeal with others in a professional manner\nMaintain professional composure in heated situations\nFollow Departmental and City policies and procedures\nCertain duties of this position are classified as “safety-sensitive.” Therefore, the person in this position will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis in accordance with the City's Alcohol & Controlled Substance Use, Abuse and Testing Policy.\n\nThis job description is not intended to be all-inclusive, and employee will also perform other reasonable related business duties as assigned by Department Head as required.
