SummaryThe responsibilities of this classification include serving, under direction, as acommissioned officer with powers of arrest, to enforce county and state codesand ordinances, and protect the lives and property of the citizens of King County.Job DutiesPatrol a designated area of the county in a police patrol vehicle and/or on foot to deter and discover crime, including on-the-scene investigation at crime scenes, assisting persons in trouble, and rendering other public safety services as needed. Respond to reports of possible crime and take action as the situation requires including securing the scene, interviewing victims and witnesses, gathering evidence, completing incident and arrest reports, investigating persons suspected of being engaged in crime, securing evidence pertaining to alleged crime, and arresting suspects. Testify in court including presenting facts and observations accurately and objectively and attesting to chain-of-custody in evidence handling. Make arrests, carry out mandates of the court, or otherwise ensure the safety of self or others, which may require the use of force, including deadly force. Investigate family disputes, reports of maltreatment of children, and complaints about mentally ill persons, including taking principals into custody or referring them to appropriate agencies, such as juvenile and medical authorities. Respond to disasters or civil disturbances, such as labor disputes, marches, riots, etc. Enforce applicable laws and ordinances. Issue citations, serve Warrants of Arrest and arrest persons on misdemeanor and felony charges, including handcuffing, searching arrested persons, securing their property, and transporting prisoners to jail. Complete necessary reports concerning alleged crime, circumstances of arrest and available evidence and witnesses. Respond to accident scenes including administering emergency first aid and summoning aid cars or other patrol units for assistance in treating the injured and controlling the scene, interviewing principals and witnesses, making general drawings of accident scenes, and completing standard accident reports. Participate in community policing activities and serve as a resource to the community. Perform related work as required, including assignments in administrative, investigative and special operations units. Perform other duties as assigned. Work may involve exposure to high risk situations that may involve injury or loss of life or that require emergency response procedures, such as the use of masks, gloves, etc. to prevent contact with infectious diseases and the use of protective clothing, equipment and other gear. Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license Graduation from high school or satisfactory completion of the General Education Development (GED) test Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment This is a Civil Service classification. US citizenship and the ability to read and write the English language are required by RCW 41.14.100 Offers of employment are contingent on passing a thorough background investigation, which includes a polygraph examination and psychological examination. Some licenses, certifications and other requirements determined to be necessary to meet the business needs of the employing unit may be required.
