Strategic Human Resources Leader (CPO or Director)
HR CPO/DirectorBernstein Shur is seeking a strategic Human Resources leader to serve as a highly engaged partner in the firm’s continued growth and organizational development. This role may be filled at either the Director or Chief People Officer level, depending on experience and qualifications. Bernstein Shur is a respected regional law firm with more than 220 professionals and a long-standing presence across Northern New England. This leadership role will help drive the firm’s strategic plan by continuing to strengthen and modernize the HR function in support of a dynamic, high-performing professional services environment. The position reports to the CEO and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team.Job RequirementsDirector LevelMinimum of 8 years of progressive Human Resources experienceMaster’s degree required; JD or comparable terminal degree preferredChief People Officer Level10–15 years of Human Resources experience, including at least 5 years in an executive leadership roleJD or other relevant terminal degree requiredKey CapabilitiesExceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to foster strong connections within leadership teams and between senior professionals and operational team members, and to influence at all levels of the organizationDemonstrated success partnering with attorneys and other senior professionals in a professional services environment (law firm experience strongly preferred)Proven experience developing and executing talent acquisition and retention strategiesDeep understanding of aligning business strategy with Human Resources initiativesExperience in policy development, governance, and complianceStrong change management capabilities and a thoughtful, measured approach to complex challengesExperience managing and optimizing HRIS platforms; familiarity with HiBob strongly preferredA commitment to delivering a high level of internal and external client service.Job StructureLocation and Work StructureThis position is based in Portland, Maine, with periodic travel to New Hampshire as needed. A hybrid work arrangement may be considered; however, consistent in-person presence in both Maine and New Hampshire offices is expected. CompensationDirector: $150,000 – $200,000Chief People Officer: $200,000 – $300,000Compensation will be determined in accordance with the firm’s mid-range compensation philosophy.
