Position SummarySummaryThis position will be responsible for administering the Institutional Biosafety Committee and the Huron CLICK software for Biological Safety. These activities include creating and maintaining CLICK Huron training guides for Biological Safety, reviewing new projects and annual continuing reviews, de-novo reviews and amendments scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, minutes and follow-up on reviewer comments and recommendations and updating smart-form pages to comply with NIH, Federal and State regulations and University requirements. This position will also serve as the safety manager for 5 buildings on campus and stay current with regulatory updates for all pertinent Governmental agencies including, but not limited to the USDA/APHIS, CDC, OSHA/MIOSHA, FAA/IATA, NIH, and State of Michigan; perform fit tests for respiratory protection compliance and conduct laboratory safety consultations. Other duties as assigned.Position attributes60% Administration of the Institutional Biosafety Committee. Creating and maintaining CLICK training guides for Biological Safety, updating smart-form pages to comply with NIH, Federal and State regulations and University requirements.10% Safety manager for 5 research buildings: point of contact for all safety matters in the buildings, meet with principal investigators, staff and students to discuss safety issues, do walkthroughs to verify compliance.10% Respiratory protection fit testing5% Conduct comprehensive workplace assessments to identify potential biological hazards, design and implement strategies to control and mitigate biohazard risks, and investigate accidents, incidents, and illnesses related to biological exposures, analyze findings, and prepare reports with recommendations for corrective actions.5% Assist Biosafety Team with duties as neededNew PI lab visitsLaboratory inspections and/or follow upAutoclave testingBlood spill and other environmental assessmentsAfter hours emergency responseThis is an off-dated position funded for two years from date of hire, with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.Minimum RequirementsKnowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, or a related field; three to five years related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in industrial hygiene, occupational health/safety biological, and chemical safety; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Knowledge of Personal computer and standard office equipment.Strong BSL-2 work experience and modern test procedures, knowledge of rules and guidelines for safe handling of hazardous biological agents.Desired QualificationsDesired QualificationsMaster’s or PhD Degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Virology or in a STEM discipline or related science field from an accredited institutionCertification as a Certified Industrial HygienistDemonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills in a diverse environment.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work cooperatively with scientists and laboratory personnelAbility to work independently and as part of a teamStrong experience with modern microbiology, genetics and molecular biology techniquesStrong experience with CRISPR gene editing and lentiviral workMinimum 4 years’ experience in the training of research or clinical microbiology laboratory personnel in standard microbiological practices, supervisory capacity preferred.
