Electrical Design Engineer

Electrical Controls Design EngineerWe are seeking a detail-oriented Electrical Controls Design Engineer to develop and document electrical control systems for custom automation equipment. This role is responsible for creating electrical schematics, generating bills of materials (BOMs), and ensuring designs comply with applicable UL and IEC standards. The ideal candidate has strong experience with EPLAN and a solid understanding of industrial control systems.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and develop electrical control schematics for industrial automation systems using EPLAN.Maintain legacy control schematics in AutoCADCreate and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) aligned with project requirements and company standardsEnsure all designs comply with UL, IEC, and other applicable electrical codes and standardsDevelop panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and interconnect drawingsCollaborate with mechanical engineers, controls engineers, and project teams to integrate electrical systems into overall machine designReview and check drawings for accuracy, completeness, and complianceSupport panel fabrication, assembly, and field installation teams by resolving design issuesMaintain documentation and revision control throughout the project lifecycleParticipate in design reviews and continuous improvement initiatives Required QualificationsAssociate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience)3+ years of experience in electrical controls design, in industrial automation or machineryKnowledge of EPLAN Electric P8 and AutoCADStrong understanding of industrial control power components (circuit breakers, fuses, FLA calculations, SCCR calculations, etc.)Strong understanding of industrial control components (PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, relays, etc.)Knowledge of industrial fieldbusWorking knowledge of UL 508A, NFPA 79, and IEC standardsWorking knowledge of automation safety requirementsExperience creating and managing BOMsAbility to read and interpret technical specifications and standards Preferred QualificationsExperience designing control panels for custom machinery or automated systemsFamiliarity with ERP systems for BOM and document managementKnowledge of panel layout optimization and wire routing best practicesExposure to international project requirements and CE markingUL MTR Certification Key SkillsAttention to detail and accuracyStrong organizational and documentation skillsAbility to manage multiple projects and deadlinesEffective communication and teamwork Work EnvironmentOn-premise office-based design role with periodic interaction with the shop floor and production teamsOccasional travel may be required for field support or customer interactionCompany OverviewNorwalt Design Inc. has been a leader in designing and building high-speed automation machinery for the consumer goods and pharmaceutical industries since 1971.
